If I were to make a film using brickfilming as the medium, and commercialise the film, would I need to obtain a license from LEGO?

I don't think so if you mention that Lego is a registered trademark. I would find the creators of "Jericho: The Promise Fulfilled", which is a commercially available DVD of a Lego Brickfilm, and ask them. They would know for certain.
I believe you have to put something along the lines of "LEGO® is a registered trademark of the LEGO® Group of companies, which does not sponsor, authorise, or endorse this. This material is presented in accordance with the LEGO® Fair Play Guidelines. "
Lego Fair Play Guidelines are here: http://aboutus.lego.com/en-us/legal-notice/fair-play/
