For a while now, I've been wanting a serious big budget Batman live-action TV show, and I even wanted it to be called "Gotham". It would be really interesting to have it style sort of like some of the more recent movies, but have an episodic nature as so all of the villains could be properly introduced and utilized.
But I find this extremely disappointing. I want a show about Batman, not a show about Batman before he was Batman. One of the coolest things about Gotham is the vilains, but most of the vilains hadn't yet been properly "born" until after Batman was "born". If you take all of that away and make it about Gordon it becomes basically just another cop show which just happens to be in the Batman universe yet with all of the stuff that makes the Batman universe so cool removed.
I realize it will have a few of them, but they're two young, and it doesn't seem right. There are a bunch of good ones who don't come along until much later.
I've grown extremely tired of detective shows in general, they've been done to death, I have only one or two that I still like (Sherlock). And this doesn't seem like it's going to have much to help it stand apart from any other regular cop show.
Since Bruce is 13, it looks like they're aiming for it to run a decent length and then have Batman finally come in for the series finale.
Perhaps if the actor ages correctly we will then get a spinoff series which is exactly the show I want, but that will take time.
But it's on Fox so it'll probably run for one season then get cancelled. Ha ha
(I'll still be watching it anyway)
I honestly don't really care, I'm really intrigued by this. The story of Batman has been done to death by this point, so I'm glad to see them delve into the psychological aspect of Batman and his childhood, and also the story of Gordon. If it was just a standard Batman show, I probably wouldn't watch it because well, it's been done so many times there wouldn't be that much new to offer. I'm just glad they're doing something fresh. Will it be good? Can't say and it's kinda looking like it'll be a bust, but I'm hoping it's good and I'll at least give it a shot.
Batman is boring.
I'm sorry - but the reason why all the Batman villans are so great is because Batman himself is the dullest character ever. He's even more boring than Superman, and thats saying a lot.
Just make a show about all the villans. Dedicating 45 mins a week to Batman is like dedicating 45 mins a week to a sadface emoticon.
I'm just annoyed that there are now four separate live-action DC universes. DC have really missed a trick, which is a shame because Superman and Batman are two of the most famous superheroes of all time. Instead of putting all their efforts into creating one, fan-pleasing, cohesive universe like Marvel has, WB and DC have decided to do a long and worringly accurate Magikarp impression.
BTW the four universes are Man of Steel/Justice League, Arrow/Flash (WB haven't commented on whether it'll tie into Justice League yet, but I doubt they will because they're ddduuuummbbb), Constantine, and now Gotham, which has been confirmed to have nothing to do with either Arrow or Man of Steel.
As much as I've always loved DC, I'm starting to lose interest. I don't see how you can get a franchise model so wrong when a multi-billion-dollar cake has been handed to you.
EDIT: Sorry Lech, was writing my post while you did yours, didn't see...
Gotham might be good, but you can't pre-judge a book, in this case, a tv show. I think tv shows can be better then movies, I think the Arrow tv show is better then the whole marvel movie universe.
