Topic: The Official Screenplay Critique Thread

Post a PDF export of any of your screenplays (written in Celtx or whatever you use) here and we'll comment and give you feedback on it. If you want to keep the screenplay private until the video is released, then don't post here.

Re: The Official Screenplay Critique Thread

I love this idea. I don't have a script ready for public viewing yet, but I love the idea.

Export the Cetlx script as a PDF, upload it to Dropbox (or any other kind of file sharing site) and link it here.

Re: The Official Screenplay Critique Thread

Here's the first draft of a script I wrote about a year ago, based on the 1950s sci fi short MARIANA.  I can email it if you'd like to read it in PDF format.  I'd love your thoughts, and the script is available to anyone who wants to direct but doesn't have a story.

Re: The Official Screenplay Critique Thread

The idea is very creative and the story is pretty good, but the introduction was kind of unclear. When I started reading it I had no idea what was going on.

Re: The Official Screenplay Critique Thread

HOO - that is a really cool story.  I like that a lot.  I hope to see it in stop mo some day.  mini/smile

You can tweak some of the lines a little bit but only in one or two places.  That last button, MARIANA, is very dark and "uncomfortable".  That doesn't make it wrong and if you're trying to stay faithful to other work then its fine and well.  It has great effect - which a script should do - but if its too dark, that last button might say "RESET", returning to one of the opening scenes where once again boredom abounds and presumably, the cycle repeats.

I wouldn't change an aweful lot though.  Very creative.  mini/smile

Re: The Official Screenplay Critique Thread

Oh, yeah.  That beginning.  I actually opened like that with the exterior scene as an establishing shot, with Mariana's voice as a voice-over, then a cut to the scene where she appears.  I wrote it that way to 1) Put what Mariana was talking about into a visual context, and 2) make it a bit more dramatic.  But now that you point that out, I can see how it is a bit confusing on a first read!

The ending to the story, "Mariana" is exactly as it ends in the story.  It is a dark ending, and meant to be uncomfortable, but also a very thought-provoking one.  The author makes us stop a moment and question what is real.

Once I made THIS Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BebcqpxeqU syncing events from Fox's "24" Day 1 (what they call season 1) to The song "So You Had A Bad Day".  (24 hours, a day, get it?)  Anyway, I thought it would be a dark comedy.  After completing it, then viewing it, I realized it was just dark.  I don't laugh when I expected to.

Re: The Official Screenplay Critique Thread

Here's the first script in my sci-fi series, "Galaxy Girl and the Space Marines".  It's designed so that all the characters in the series, except for Commander Keene, are from the collection of Collectible (Mystery) minifigures.  The characters are either space, monster, or historic warrior themed.  The writing is a tribute to the style of vintage space operas like "Flash Gordon", where the characters were broad and good was good and bad was bad.

I don't want to post anything beyond episode 1 or I give it all away.  Like "Mariana", it's available to anyone who loves to animate but needs a story.  The one condition: Brick7 is to be cast as Galaxy Girl.

Here's the PDF; my first upload to Dropbox:

Actually, though it's in my Public folder, no one can access it.  I researched how to make files public but it still doens't work.  Any help will be sweet.

Re: The Official Screenplay Critique Thread

If you created a new folder you might need to individually invite each of us to that folder (which is bad).

You should have a public folder by default.  If you do - use that one instead.  We should be able to access that one immediately without fuss.

Re: The Official Screenplay Critique Thread

There was no public folder, so I created one called "public" and it was supposed to be automatically recognized as a public folder, but it isn't.  mini/sad

Re: The Official Screenplay Critique Thread

Try creating a folder with the name "Public" exactly without quotes, with correct case.

Re: The Official Screenplay Critique Thread

I think that's how I did, but I will l give it a shot!  Thx!
