Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I know of many 'epic endings'.

Like in 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' - which I wont spoil. Or the ending to 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' - where the house turns into a rocket and blasts the transvestites back to the distant wastelands from whence they came (that movies so weird....) Or 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' (2008), which really did ask the question of 'what happened?' Or the end of the 'Allo Allo' Sicom ("You stupid woman! Cant you not see; I am eloping!!"). Or the several endings to 'Lord of the Rings'. Or my personal favourite, the ending to 'Terminator 2', which even the most macho of mans will weep at, and left you sitting staring at the closing credits thinking "damn". I remember when watching 'Michael Jacksons: This is It' and almost everyone waited untill the end of the closing credits to see if there was anymore footage of MJ performing, and there was.....all 20 seconds of it. But we still loved it.

I love pre-Star Wars movies, where the credits were at the beggining - meaning you have to sit around for an hour watching a load of names you dont care about flashing onscreen yelling "GET ON WITH IT!!" but the ending was just a "The End" screen. Which brings us swiftly to this gem:

The Time Machine (1960)

Based on the GENIUS that was H.G.Wells's inspiration for Doctor Who (or Doctor Who's inspiration to H.G.Wells - according to the classic series) comes a surprisingly epic and suspenseful adventure from the decade that bought us BATMAN!! *holds DVD up to the sky as a white light falls upon it and an unseen choir sings a high note*

For its time, the effects are like 'Avatar'. I'm sure many people on this site will be interested in the groundbreaking timelapse sequences, and obvious yet really cool minatures blended with live-action. Whilst the production value is dated, the time-travel sequences still look amazing. And this movie has a really fun action sequence, with the Time Traveller delivering a Shatner-style dropkick, and throwing blue cavemen into giant pits of lava before single handedly commiting genocide. You know who this guy reminds me of......

Meh. Not quite as awesome.

Overall, it should deserve a better reputation as a classic. It appears this gem has been lost within a sea of diamonds.

2012

Had everything a good disaster movie needs: fantastic CGI, a semi-plausible plot, a down-on-his-luck father (and his family), the president and a scarily accurate countdown timer.
Acting and storytelling come second is such movies.

Ran

I've been aching to see more Kurosawa films, this one in particular. This is an incredible, outstanding masterwork; devastating and heartbreaking, but also beautiful and awe-inspiring. Everything from the costuming and art direction to the human drama to the incredible action scenes make this one of the most captivating films I've ever seen. The cinematography in particular really stood out to me. Shot almost entirely in long-shot, the imagery is not only beautiful, but also puts the viewer at arm's length from the action, making us feel like observers of the chaos and powerless to help or intervene in any way. I now have a new favorite "feel-bad" movie.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I just noticed that 30 pages down is an old topic of mine i never got to see responses too, man even to myself I sounded like a noob. mini/smile

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Sounds like a great movie.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

28 Days Later

This was a really good movie. It's by far the scariest NEW film I've ever seen, it really got under your skin. The acting by everyone really sold the realism.

4/5

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Yeah all zombie movies should be like that 28 Days Later. It just proves that the English are better at making horror movies than the Americans (seriously I reckon Hollywood must release a new horror movie every month and they are always so crap and cliché).

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Rashomon

Another excellent Kurosawa film that left me with a fascinating sense of moral ambiguity. The cinematography and use of lighting was very effective, and I liked how each individual story portrays each character differently (I especially liked the different ways Toshiro Mifune played his role as Tajomaru the Bandit; at times it would feel like he's playing a completely different character than before). That incongruity helped add to the greater sense of uncertainty, so that no one's story seemed more truthful than the other.

Pure awesomeness. That's all there is to say.

Oh yes, great western. I still need to see For a few dollars more.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Clint Eastwood is !@#$in awesome.
Speaking of For A Few Dollars More, I must say that it's pretty good, in fact I like it better than Fistful Of Dollars.
One thing: Sergio Leone uses the guy who played Ramón to play a different character (El Indio). Plus, The guy who Lee Van Cleef plays in it is  a different character to the one he plays in The Good, the Bad, And The Ugly. It's well confusin'.

EDIT: Actually, on second thought, Fistful Of Dollars is the better of the two.
