How would you guys go about creating a black expanse to animate minifigs in?
I've done this before. Just like a white expanse, except with a really big black paper in a dark room and careful lighting.
I also curved my black paper up over the set to block more light as well.

I recommend doing it like Leonardo describes, you can also change the brightness and contrast in post if it's still not looking good.
Like Bastetta mentioned, fiddling a bit with the settings in post production should get you a nice, black look.
