Topic: Logitech C910 HD Pictures

Long time no see...

I am trying to get back into brickfilming, and I realized that my available camera is my Logitech C910. I know it is a good webcam and all, but I just can't get those HD crisp shots that I want. I am most likely going to take the pictures, then export them into Sony Vegas Pro 11.0 for editing.

My question is, what software should I use to take the photos? And what kind of settings do I need to use to get the best quality?

It's really good to be back, or atleast seeing old members still being active.
This might be asked in the wrong place. I am quite a bit rusty on the forum..

There are several options as far as taking individual frames. You could, one, use the logitech software associated with your C910. And, two, you could use a frame capture program; which I would recommend.

I'm assuming your using a windows platform, as so, both MonkeyJam and Helium Frog are great choices for frame capture. There are many advantages of using either of these programs, but I suppose the main advantage is the fact that they are freeware.

I have used MonkeyJam in the past with my webcam set to a resolution of 800x800; which I then converted to 1080x720 in Sony Vegas. For achieving a crisp image quality, try playing around with the exposure as well as the contrast.

Since you're wanting HD images, you'll need to take the pictures in that resolution or higher. (1920x1080)
Snapping anything lower (Like 800x800) will force you to expand the images quite a bit and you'd loose a lot of quality. Other than that, Willow Tree is spot-on.

If you want to edit them as individual frames in Sony Vegas, then you'll need to go into the settings of Helium Frog and set it to export images. Monkey Jam does it automatically, if you go that option.

Thanks for the advice and the links!

I have tried iStopMotion, DragonFrame, Helium Frog and MonkeyJam before, but I just couldn't get the Logitech Software to capture good pictures. I never quite got Helium Frog to work optimally, probably some technical stuff I did wrong. I do prefer onion skinning when animating, so I might go back to DragonFrame.

Please excuse my english (which hasn't improved since I joined, lol), I might have asked the question(s) in a bad way.

Is there something else I have to do with the webcam, other than setting the pixel resolution? Should I take the pictures further away, and then crop it in Post, or take the close-up shots during Production?

Also, I was wondering if there was any other things affecting the picture quality? I'm getting new lamps as I have experienced light flickering due to my lamps, or lightbulbs, being different Watts. And I've already got a nice studio in a room without windows.

If the problem remains consistent across all the capture software you've tried, I imagine the problem lies in the webcam drivers themselves. I assume you're using a PC. Make sure you've got the latest version of the webcam's drivers here (Click the "downloads" tab then select your operating system).

Dragonframe is about as top-tier as stop motion software gets. If you can afford it, that's what I'd suggest. Otherwise there's plenty of free software to do the job. We've been running a software census recently to see how many people use different capture software and why, so that might be interesting for you to check out.

Alright thanks, I'll try to see if I need new drivers.

I always preferred DragonFrame over MonkeyJam and Helium Frog. So I think I'm going to stick with DragonFrame, and use the separate-picture in Sony Vegas if I ever need to use special effects again.
