I think we're grasping straws here.
Orson Scott Card fans would probably claim it's a nod to them as well.

While most of us were watching the Super-Bowl, this happened.

The Puppy Bowl actually aired before the Super Bowl. I should know because I watched the whole thing.
My mistake then. I was told it was airing during the Super-Bowl. 
I actually enjoyed the ads this year.
