Topic: In-camera candlelight

Has anyone (successfully) attempted a candlelit scene? The candles would be minifig-scale so the actual flames I'd put in in post production but as far as lighting affecting the set the best solution I can come up with is to try and do some tiny spotlight lighting on the areas that would be affected by the candles. This could be messy and annoying and really not quite the right look but it's the best solution I can think of.

Re: In-camera candlelight

I've lit a simple campfire scene by shining a red laser onto a transparent yellow piece under the fire.

If you want the candle to flicker, as you are shooting the scene, take two pictures for every frame- one with the light source on and one with the light source off.  Sort the frames so that you have two animations- one with the candle emitting light, and one with the candle emitting no light.  In After Effects, layer the light layer on top of the no-light layer and add wiggle keyframes to the transparency of the light layer to make the candle flicker.

Re: In-camera candlelight

Good use of wiggle. Besides that it sounds like a similar technique to what I have planned.

Re: In-camera candlelight

You could try Evans Designs. They have some good ideas, and are inexpensive too.

!!

I never thought of looking into model train solutions. Which is dumb of me because I used to build train sets with Dad.

Good call jahnocli, I'll look into it!

Re: In-camera candlelight

Could you put something reflective on top of the candle and hit it with laser pointers? Like a miniature disco ball, it'd light up the surrounding areas.

Re: In-camera candlelight

Nice idea, but at that scale (a couple of millimeters) I'm not sure how effective it'd be. Also I don't have any yellow laser pointers.

Fibre optic strands may be a solution.

LifeLites, not much more to say.

A Life? Cool! Where can I download one of those from?

Re: In-camera candlelight

My wallet isn't a fan of Lifelites.

I do wish this was an option for me though.

That $300 investment on Lifelites hasn't paid off yet. Haven't even tried using them in a video... mini/blankexpression

Give them to me, and I'll do what you should have done ten minutes ago.

Re: In-camera candlelight

So I've heard talk for a long time about Lifelights; did not realize they were designed specifically for LEGO, wow. mini/blankexpression

Re: In-camera candlelight

Get these awful image macros out of here. Bricks in Motion isn't the place for this crap.

On topic: I used LifeLites to create the fire effect in The Meek and the Bold. My lights were white, filtered through a trans-orange LEGO plate. Here is a behind-the-scenes picture:

I think they are well worth the investment. And they don't really cost that much at all.

Re: In-camera candlelight

Ah, very nice. LifeLites have indeed proved to be quite handy. I may have to invest in some myself; I've had my eye on the LifeLite/BrickForge lamp post.
