When I first heard about the LEGO Disney Princess Theme, I was very excited, since I am a fan. But once that I saw it will be like LEGO friends, I was disappointed. Anyway, what do you guys think of it?

Sounds interesting. Since no set has been released yet (as far as I know), I don't know where exactly I stand on this. It could be good and it could be bad. 
The only thing I don't like is that they aren't actual minifigures, but I am now considering getting some still, they look good.

That is true, but they remind me more of the LEGO Friends line. I won't buy any sets myself, but I might spread the word to some of the moms I know, especially my piano teacher, because I know that she has two daughters under age ten who are absolutely gung ho about fairy-tale princesses.
If you don't think that Disney Princesses are the coolest you need to rethink your life.
The sets are out, they are on the LEGO Shop and in the newest catalog. They look alright, but they're Friends doll things so I'm out. 
Annoyed that they went with the Disneyfied/beautified version of Merida.

No, they haven't come out in the UK yet (along with most new Chima sets), but I'm already considering maaaayyybe getting the smallest Ariel one and the Merida one. They both have some really great pieces.
I just don't like how they made the minifigures.

If they are going to start spewing out a new kind of minifig, they should have made it better than the old one, like, maybe with joints.

on the whole I am wholly dissatisfied with this theme! the set designs look like they are back in the Duplo era. And why did they decide to make the princesses with the Lego Friends design? There is some really lovely architecture in the Disney movies and this simply doesn't do it justice.

This was my reaction as well.
They are adding way to much pink. It's inaccurate.
Some of the bricks in these sets certainly look useful, but I'm not particularly enthused about the Freinds-style mini-dolls.
Besides, my family probably would never let me hear the end of it if I actually attempted to buy a set...
