Topic: Curved Motion Rig

I've built yet another thing to try to help with camera movements.

The basic point of this is to have the car holding the camera so it can move in a curved path around a single point to create some interesting camera motions.  So far I'm liking the new things I can do with it.  Though I've only done some rough tests.  The thing at the end is supposed to be attached to something to keep it still, BTW.

Right now I don't have any fancy gears or anything like my dolly rig, so everything has to be done by feel.  But I'm hoping to try to add some improvements.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

Clever mini/smile If you want to add gears the top part of the center would be a good place to put a big one and then attach a mechanism to that.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

Yeah, I was thinking of adding a third axle with wheels to the middle of the car and putting a weird tall gear thing on that.  It would also help with stability.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

Interesting rig. I can't help but feel the anchor would get in the way of a lot of shots?

It wouldn't.  Not with they way I have things set up at least.

I have a table, then a little sort of mini table on top of it with Duplo legs.  I have this mainly so that my tripod can be level with my set, but there's also plenty of room for the anchor underneath.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

Would love to see a photo or an animated gif of it in action.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

That looks very useful! I was thinking of doing something like this. It involved building a little cart and laying down train tracks. My method would probably more stable with webcams though.
Can't wait to try it!

Re: Curved Motion Rig

As it happens, I also have been working on a 'curved motion rig' of my own, as my larger project in the making demands it. Although my design shares the anchor idea, I favour using a curved train track, on which I have a webcam on train wheels, opposed to the car wheels + tires that you used. The car tires tend to vary as you shift them, due to their ridges, whereas the curved train track produces a far smoother result.

But yours is still a very insightful and interesting build. It'd be nice to see it in action!

Re: Curved Motion Rig

Squid, have you tested that yet?
I'm interested in seeing how it comes out.
The railroad track also sounds really good, and would eliminate the hassle of the anchor point's plates sticking into frame.

All of my attempts at a curved rig have been simple turntables at the anchor point, a 2X12 plate, (or so) and the 4X10 plate at the end holding the camera. The end plate has some of these round slider plates on the bottom, and that's it.

The curves come out a tiny bit rough, but still pretty good for hand-guided movements.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

I'm still having some trouble with it thus far.  Carousel is right about the lumps.  I can still do something fast, but if i try anything slow and gradual it's not going to look nice.  I'll need some more work on it try try to make it better.

Railroad tracks sound really great, unfortunately, I don't actually have any which are curved.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

Brilliant idea, simple yet effective. I tried out curved train track and the problem I had was the lack of resistance. If someone found a fix for that, it would work fairly well. The main issue then would be the lack of customization, one turning radius and that's it.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

I suddenly feel like my camera rigs are very puny and makeshift when looking at yours ANP. mini/tongue

Anyway, here's a couple of methods I've used for rotating shots:

Instead of moving the camera for this one, I move the set (made easier with onion skinning). It worked really well with a black expanse as the background, but had a few jutters.

Those are lovely, legoguy.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

Yes, those are great. And I just realized I have the same train track pieces, so I should put together a rig....

Re: Curved Motion Rig

Thanks guys. The only problem with the tracks is that they have a small bump where they join together.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

Honestly I find just putting the set onto a lazy susan and rotating that to be a fairly efficient way of doing it.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

If you happen to have a lazy susan, that would be best...but not everyone has one.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

I have a lazy susan, but I can't get her off the couch.

Re: Curved Motion Rig

I just made a curved motion rig that does not require a track and is moved by a mechanism, not by hand.
