Topic: Brick built explosions
Does any one have any tips, techniques, or how to build explosions with LEGO like the one seen in the LEGO Cars 2 trailer or the LEGO Movie trailer?
Thanks

Check out the animation challenge thread. They did a challenge for this awile back. The winner will be on page one.
I did that already. The one I found was the lamp short and wasn't like the type of explosuion I'm looking for.
Also check out Squid's "Enter Vladmir Vango," that had a great looking brick-built explosion. Also the new trailer for The LEGO Movie, and while it is CGI it was still an explosion made of LEGO bricks.
I made one (not sure if it's what you're looking for)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxYHl5x9sGk
You might try watching this video, The Fastest and Funniest LEGO Star Wars story ever told. I believe it has some brick built explosions of sorts.

Thank you guys for the links but I'm asking how do you make one or if there is any instructions or certain techniques with photos.
Try downloading the videos that people have linked to from YouTube. Then you can go through the explosion frame by frame and observe exactly how people did them, that's all I can suggest unless someone here is an expert on brick built explosions.
Thank you guys for the advice. I'm going to try to check out the explosions frame by frame.
I'm not sure if it is to late to post this, but, I made a brick built explosion.
Gee dang it! I remembered in the topic for Vlad Vango, squid posted some images explaining the process, but they have since been taken down. I'm sure you could ask him to reupload them (here's the
Actually thanks for sharing that Squid, its a very insightful & interesting technique!
Thank you for the photos.
Don't know if there's a stock one on YouTube or other video sites, but if you can find an explosion on a green screen you could chroma key one in.
Boom.
Insert awesome photos
Awesome. I wish I had the pieces

Wow, thanks for sharing Squid! I was just wondering how to do these myself the other day, this will be really useful.
Just make sure you have a lot of extra lights. Use orange bricks for the explosion.
Shine the lights through orange or red bricks to give it the correct hue and then shine them onto the pile of bricks.
I actually considered shining a light upwards through a hole in the ground to illuminate the bricks from beneath, though I'm not sure how practical that would be.
Just wondering, how do you connect those bricks together? Did you connect them like any other bricks, or use sticky stuff to hold them together?
That's an impressive explosion, Squid. It interests me because I like to make everything brick-built. Rocky 411, you can visit bricklink.com and buy the parts you need. In fact, I gotta go there myself!
