Topic: Brickhead's Storyboard Template
Howdy.
I promised to make this available a while ago and never got around to it. Better late than never though, right?
Storyboarding is important for filmmaking. I (hopefully) don't need to convince anyone here of this.
A couple of years back I spent some time creating a clean, professional template for storyboarding. Pretty much every template I found online didn't suit my taste - they felt too cluttered or inflexible.
"Why bother with a template? Why not just scribble some boxes on a piece of paper and use that?"
Sure, you could do that. Personally, I prefer cleaner and consistent layouts when planning something. When you're working on a project on your own, as many brickfilmers do, scribbling some boxes on a piece of paper is perfectly fine. All they need to do is serve as reminders, really. However by using a template you make it that much easier to collaborate with other people on projects, as one will almost always do in the animation industry. It helps keep things structured and organised, which is good practice even if you're working solo.
You can download a .zip folder containing a .PSD file and .JPG files here.
Alternatively, you can download the files individually with the following links:
I have also submitted a download link to the .zip to Bricks In Motion's resources section. When it's been approved, it will be found here.
The JPG files are ready to print out onto paper for you to draw on with good ol' pens and pencils. The Photoshop file includes editable text fields, masks for panels and rule of third guides. So, you can customise it and be all fancy-like.
As an example of this template in use, here's a page from a film I've been working on (but has been on hiatus) for the past year or two. Now, your storyboards don't need to have nearly this much effort put into them. So long as your storyboards successfully help you plan out shots for the film and convey that information well.
So there you have it. Hopefully this you guys will find this helpful. Now, go forth and storyboard your next film!
