Topic: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

Howdy.

I promised to make this available a while ago and never got around to it. Better late than never though, right?

Storyboarding is important for filmmaking. I (hopefully) don't need to convince anyone here of this.

A couple of years back I spent some time creating a clean, professional template for storyboarding. Pretty much every template I found online didn't suit my taste - they felt too cluttered or inflexible.

"Why bother with a template? Why not just scribble some boxes on a piece of paper and use that?"

Sure, you could do that. Personally, I prefer cleaner and consistent layouts when planning something. When you're working on a project on your own, as many brickfilmers do, scribbling some boxes on a piece of paper is perfectly fine. All they need to do is serve as reminders, really. However by using a template you make it that much easier to collaborate with other people on projects, as one will almost always do in the animation industry. It helps keep things structured and organised, which is good practice even if you're working solo.

You can download a .zip folder containing a .PSD file and .JPG files here.
Alternatively, you can download the files individually with the following links:

I have also submitted a download link to the .zip to Bricks In Motion's resources section. When it's been approved, it will be found here.

The JPG files are ready to print out onto paper for you to draw on with good ol' pens and pencils. The Photoshop file includes editable text fields, masks for panels and rule of third guides. So, you can customise it and be all fancy-like.

As an example of this template in use, here's a page from a film I've been working on (but has been on hiatus) for the past year or two. Now, your storyboards don't need to have nearly this much effort put into them. So long as your storyboards successfully help you plan out shots for the film and convey that information well.

So there you have it. Hopefully this you guys will find this helpful. Now, go forth and storyboard your next film!

Re: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

Your drawing doesn't need to be great, or even good - stick figures are perfectly fine. So long as it helps plan out the shot!

Bumpity bump. I'd appreciate any feedback from people who use this (and for that matter, feedback from people who don't use it). Is it missing anything? Ideas on how to improve it?

Re: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

It seems pretty good to me.
If I ever find myself wanting to use a story board I'd probably use this.

I've never actually wanted to storyboard, though, whenever I plan out a shot, I have an extremely clear picture in my mind of how I imagine the shot to look, and I can remember that image for well over a year if necessary. Add to that I'm a very bad and slow drawer, and using a pencil hurts my my hand.
The only reason I would really need one is to communicate ideas to other people. But the only time I enlist help is when my brother animates.

Re: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

I stopped using the template I had and started to draw my own sloppy boxes so I'd have more room to write actions, dialoge, ect. but your one solves that problem. Thanks for making it available.

Re: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

I was considering using storyboards on an upcoming project and these looks great! If I get far enough into preproduction and actually use them I'll be sure to leave some substantial feedback, but until then I'll just say thanks for sharing these! mini/smile

I was thinking more like

Lucas:heres the storyboard!
Average Joe: whats that?
Lucas: its a chair.
Average Joe: ...what?

Re: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

This is great! Even though I actually have this sort of a comic book template that can be used for storyboarding, this will be better. Thanks!

Re: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

I think I can forgive you for forgetting, seeing as it only took me A WHOLE STINKIN' YEAR to release it since I first promised to.

Re: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

These look great.  I've downloaded them and can see us using them on the next project, or maybe the one after that.  We are working on our second brickfilm right now, so we aren't quite to the point of using these yet, but they are certainly what we are working up to.

I think they would be most helpful for those who create longer films (somewhere beyond 3-5 minutes, or with many different shots/angles), as the work of building shots etc. can really be done with the mind's eye for shorter/less dynamic films.

That being said, this is an excellent template for larger undertakings, and I see us adding it to our workflow in the near future.  Thanks for sharing.  I will certainly report back once we use it.

Re: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

I downloaded it, but there is a grid that I'd like to get rid of. I know it's something I accidentally set in Photoshop, does anyone know how to remove the grid?

Re: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

Ctrl+' or view -> Show -> Grid

That should do it for you.

Re: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

Ah, thank you. Great template, Sean, this might come in handy.

Re: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

BUMP

I just want more people to use this mini/wink

Re: Brickhead's Storyboard Template

Wow, this seems like it could be really helpful, thanks.
Any chance we could be seeing a GIMP version of the template?

.psd files should work fine in GIMP.

Thanks for putting this out there, Sean. We might be using it for some big projects we have coming.
