I was experimenting with putting paper over my lamps today, since the last time I filmed I had some trouble with light reflections/flicker. I used normal printing paper, but then hardly any light shone on the set. Straight-on light seems to be a problem for me, is there another alternative that would work better?

Turn the lamp away from the set? It may just be really dark but it might give a nice effect.
I am mystified as to why printer paper didn't work. Maybe you should try a plastic grocery bag or some wax paper. Or maybe just get more lamps, so the shadows are not so harsh.
If you can order some plain diffusion gels, they don't melt and are great for soft light Something like this would give you different levels of diffusion and should have enough gels for all your lights, a cheaper alternative would be something like oven Parchment paper or the like.
I use a lot of gels and effects on lights frequently and often end up having to expose each frame at something like an 1/8th of a second, sometimes even slower then that. I couldn't shoot with a webcam and be limited to exposure of 1/30 or faster.
I use two layers of wax paper I folded it over then tapped it onto the lamps. Make sure you aim them properly as well as topit said.
Well, the lamps I use are LED lamps that don't really get hot (I can have whatever I want right on the 'bulb' for as long as I want), so this may not be an option for you, but I use tracing paper. Super cheap for a large pad, and thin enough that I can use multiple sheets to get exactly the effect I want. I wouldn't suggest using it on incandescent lamps though. Your filming might be severely interrupted. 
In that case I would do what SlothPaladin said. Just get some light gels. I've been wanting to get some for ages just so I could have interesting lighting effects...

And SlothPaladin, those gels look really cool for lighting effects. Are the gels you shared the ones you use?
I have a pack of like 20 some colored gels which are a lot of fun for incorporating into your lighting, creative lighting is one of things I enjoy the most when making animation.
All the gels I have are from LEE filters, I don't think I have that diffusion pack specifically, but I do have some diffusion gels from a few variety packs I have picked up.
I also have some cheap DJ light gels that I will sometimes cut up if I just want to color a tiny part of a light or create some specific glowing effect.
