Re: Sets and Props Critique Thread
My camera doesn't have manual focus, a feature I missed on the camera I used before I started Brickfilming.

I don't know what I'd do without manual focus…it's only in my really, really old brickfilms where I didn't have a camera with it. I bought a proper DSLR pretty soon into starting on this hobby.
My set for Leprechauns in France, which may be my best yet:
What do you think? I'd like to improve it any way I can. It's a shame I couldn't be consistent with the style trees, but I think I made about as as many as I could.
Unfortunately, I couldn't really think of any way to make it look specifically French besides putting some black truffles under a few of the trees.
It's also worth mentioning that the entire film takes place in very close proximity to that bench.
I really like the bridge/waterfall/stream part of it
Those trees are really nice! I've seen that technique a couple of times on flickr and mocpages, you have executed it very well!
The waterfall looks unnaturally flat. Try adding some depth to it.
Beautiful. The way you made the bridge is especially genius, I love it.
I suppose you could stick a French flag on a flagpole somewhere in the park (it should be pretty easy to build out of bricks) though I'm not sure if that would be a bit too obvious. Or perhaps you could put a mime in the background somewhere.
Just curious, will there be a casting call for this film?

Squid. Oh. My. Glob.
That is truly amazing - those trees are beautiful, but the bridge and waterfall are the true show-stealers here. The immense size of this set is also impressive. I have nowhere near enough bricks to make anything like this. Nonetheless, it's truly inspirational and going straight in my look-book.
May I ask how you made the bridge? If yes, may I also borrow the design?
Oh my god Squid, I just can't. Words can't even describe how amazing that is.

That is intentional. I like it being especially simple and bright blue, almost like a cartoon or some sort of drawing. I feel is gives the forest a somewhat surreal look.

It's pretty simple. Arch bricks can be used in a special way by sticking the stud of a brick into the arch part of it. It's actually a "legal" move and stays on quite well. It's a pretty common advanced MOC technique, though rarely ever utilized in LEGO sets.
I've used this technique several times in films, usually to just add some detail to an arch, like several 1x1 plates to give it a more detailed look.
For this, though, I've used several 1x8 dark grey plates which attach to both sides of the bridge underneath the arches. This both gives the bridge a really fancy looking curved but studded look on the inside, and from the side it has some really cool stone detail.
I actually had a bridge very similar to this in Mailbox and Pirates Rule, but nobody really noticed it because it was all black. I decided to add a stream to this film specifically so that I could show my new design off properly, however, this made the construction of the set take a lot longer because I had to have the snot stream significantly lower than the rest of the set, so everything else has to be elevated, but it really does give it all some excellent detail.
Feel free to use it as you please, even an exact replica.

This film was cast ages ago. It only has three characters, two played by me with voices at almost absolute opposites of my vocal range, and another played by Hal. I specifically decided to expand a short idea I had with an Irish character specifically intended for Hal to play, however, the film was put on hold for a year and a half because Hal took some time getting to his lines.
It's also narrated by Sonjira, and is done in my typical storybook style. I actually based that style off of this film, which was written before all of the others in that style.
I specifically wrote this with a narrator because after seeing BIRDFaCE I decided that I must make a film with Sonjira's voice.
My gosh Squid, that's beautiful.
[never mind, you answered about the waterfall], but the bridge and riverbank is amazing. I think the one orange tree in the top right feels off, the only one with the wedge slopes.
Besides that, it's absolutely amazing and I can't wait to see what you do with it!

Do you think I should move it somewhere else?
It looks great! You are one of the best set makers in brickfilming. I love how in your sets, you make rock faces, hills, trees, and more look so organic.

I love the stream and the bridge, but the whole thing is just amazing, I can't really critique it.
Small set for my Animation Challange entry: (The film will be much better quality, this was taken with my iPod)

I'm not sure, I'd suggest taking it out entirely I guess. It just stands out a lot compared to the others, at least if it's a shot of most of it. When it's an actual scene it may not be noticeable because it's probably not a big wide shot.

That's fantastic.
I need to build a forest set for my upcoming mini-series. Do you mind if I use this set design for reference?
Wow, that looks great! The colours blend really nicely and beautifully compliment the image. I look forward to the finished product.
