Once again, Lego has redone their Trains line, and they are abolishing both RC and 9V, and replacing it with something called Lego Power Functions. Here is their newest set. The image links are at the bottom of the second page.

I saw it on TBB awhile ago, and its pretty awesome! If you go to railbricks.com and download their latest magazine (issue 5) there is an article in it on the new PF trains.
I'd really love to play with some power funcitons.
It's available for pre-order from S@H, though I'm a bit skeptical about the "piston powered wheels" bit.
The longer description says "piston action", and I can't see the advantage in going from a simple, reliable electric motor to some new piston-powered method of locomotion (pardon the pun) which would probably have an electric motor in there anyway. From the images on Lugnet, I'd say that the piston is decorative and not a source of power. I'd imagine that the tender has the battery box and it has electric motors in the wheel section.
Where's the pre-order? I only see an "add to wishlist".

It just says "Available 15th April" - not that you can pre-order it. My bad... 
I've now pre-ordered this, as well as ordered 150 dark blue grey studs, 150 light blue grey studs and 3 random minifigs from Brickscope. The Studs are for coal 
I plan to make a film with this one.

However much it cost, plus the $30 that Lego charges for shipping.
I got that set a few weeks ago. Even though the release date was the 15th (at least that's what I gather), I got mine on the 7th. I got it at the LEGO store in Chicago, so there might've been a special release because of it being Chicago. Sometimes things like that are released in big cities first. Apparently, I was the first to get one there. The employees said that they had just taken them off of the truck.
I don't know how the timeline of this all fits. 
If anyone wants an idea on the scope or scale of this, I filmed the putting to-gether of it. It took two hours, but I edited it to over 500% faster, so it's only about 9 minutes.

In the instructions, they do have added directions to convert it to a motorised form.

But the remote just got recalled for overheating, so I guess your out of luck.
