These two articles helped me the most.
You're not limited to customizing with only legos, I've made many helmets from baked clay and painted them, good luck! I don't recommend sharpy though, it looks tacky and fades easily.
Brickjournal had a delightful set of articles on that sort of thing. And the owner of Fineclonier published a book on that too.
