Topic: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

Hey Brickfilmers! mini/smile I'm sure all of us have had writer's block (or in the case should we call it brick block?) and I am wondering what you all do when you're stuck. When you've thought hard for hours on end and can't come up with a single good idea, what do you do? I feel burned out creatively tonight, as I've been struggling to come up with an idea for a new animation. I thought it might be useful to see what other's do and discuss helpful ways to get those creative juices flowing. Post your thoughts and tips! Are you stuck right now?

(I'm somewhat new to this forum so if there is already a thread for this, my apologies.)

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

Don't try to come up with an idea. If you do that then you will never come up with one. Instead, just go about your daily life until an idea hits you. But then you have to remember that you were in fact looking for an idea and then write it down so you don't forget.
Every single time I tried to come up with an idea on command, like for THAC or BRAWL, I've always failed. It helps to have a notebook where you just write down whatever comes to mind incase its usable for a brickfilm. All my inspirations have come from the random idiosyncrasies of life, and I am sure I am not alone

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

What topit said.

When I was younger I could just look in a Lego catalog and get ideas for brickfilms. Unfortunately, I can't anymore, but you can still try it. mini/tongue

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

Have something to write your idea down with at all times. It could be a notebook, or an index card, or even a tissue.

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

A lot of the time, I just come up with an idea when I take a walk or ride my bike. It just sorta makes my mind kinda get going.

Other than that, sometimes just general experiences in life give you inspiration. I know something that happened to me at school was the inspiration for BIRDFaCE. (To my recollection, the event involved a squirrel, a top hat, a ban saw, and Robert Downey Jr.)

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

I get inspired when I listen to music. Sometimes, when I need an idea, I go through Kevin Macleod's library. I don't know if this will work for you, put I definantly suggest trying it. mini/smile

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

As far as ideas for an actual film, topit is right on, you can't force it. However sometimes I'm in the mood to make a goofy short or random bit of animation to keep in practice, and I frequently look through my box of obscure bricks for inspiration. I made this when I looked at a plant brick and thought "I'll make them pop out of the ground" and this when I bought the pirate minifig and felt like doing something silly with it. They're not great brickfilms or anything, but when I really want to animate, the bricks themselves are pretty great inspiration. mini/smile

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

Yep music is the only answer for me. I close my eyes, listen to some great film's soundtrack (sometimes  though  I listen to songs like "Placebo - Running up the Hill" or "Kavinsky - Nightcall" and that's the only way it works for me.)

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

I listen to music. Sad music if I want to make a sad movie, happy music if I want to make a happy film,
and EPIC music if I want to make an EPIC movie,
If I want to make a short funny film I just mess around with my bricks, or sometimes get inspiration from outside.

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

Music is always an inspiration, it helps me to find the mood I want my film to be.
I start off by writing a story, and when I'm done I just make it into a script with text lines.

Funnily enough I only get ideas when I'm in the shower or when I read a book (mind you not any book, it has to be factious book for some reason) mini/cat .

No other place where you can be quiet and alone like the shower mini/cat .

I usually get ideas from music (I listen to mainstream and alternative radio stations, and the lyrics can be easily transformed into brickfilms) or from my siblings/friends. Also, going out into shopping squares and malls often help me get ideas for brickfilms.

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

I usually get ideas by thinking of everyday things, like a pizza shop, and then finding a way to make it awesome.[:P]  Movies also give me ideas.

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

I think you should in fact actively try to come up with an idea, it frequently works for me. If it's not working for you than stop for a while and get back to it later, at a time when you do feel inspired. You just have to have something to start with so you can expand that what you have into an entire story. I think coming up with ideas is one of the easier parts.

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

I usually have trouble coming up with a good idea in a short time span. This was my main problem during THAC. I spent a few hours trying to come up with a good story, and when I finally started making one I lost motivation because I realised it was actually pretty bad.
It takes a while for me to come up with an idea that I think might have potential, and then I continuously revise it over a period of several days to several months. When I'm satisfied with it, I begin writing a script.

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

If you want to come up with good ideas and stories, make sure you're reading/watching/listening to well-told stories from others. Not only will you learn the mechanics of good storytelling (as well as those of poor storytelling), it will help you identify themes, settings, situations, and character types you particularly resonate with. An oft-repeated truism is to "write what you know." I think it's better to write what you're passionate about - you'll be motivated to learn more as you write.

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

I watch Sherlock (BBC series, not the Film) for a few hours and its got my creative juices pumping.

But in a more general context, reading books and listening to music really help. With books you're opening yourself to ideas, and with music you're being inspired. A combination of both is epic. Then of course its always good brainstorm with other people. Also watching TV and Movies is also handy, but thats pretty obvious.

I'll be back animating soon! Exams and computer faults are keeping me away </3

If I want an idea, I usually just animate random stuff. That usually gives me ideas that I can adapt.

Thanks for all of the feedback fellow filmers! I see a general pattern in most of the responses thus far and I believe Jargon put it the best:

Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions, I'm sure new ideas will come to me eventually. I'm attempting to have a new animation release every 2 weeks, whether it be some short film or simply some tests. I can tell this is going to be difficult, does anyone here have experience creating consistent content on a weekly or bi-monthly basis? I'd enjoy hearing some tips about how to execute consistent animations well. Thanks in advance and thanks again for the help and encouragement!

Re: Creating a Story - How Do You Do it?

I look at the new Lego sets of LEGO.com and when I see a good one I might get hit by an idea.  Then I think about it, get my mom to let me buy it, then start writing.  That's how I got the idea for my newest film Unit 4( but I'm still making that one).  Or I look at some of the newest movies or brickfilms.  That might give me an idea or just give me something to do for 3 hours mini/lol
