Topic: Spam bots are back?

Hi guys.

Okay, I think some of us will have noticed that there are new members who are just posting randomly in new topics and old threads, trying to sell us random things.

It looks like the spam bots are back, and this time their getting accounts on the website to spam things. Just wondering if something can be done about this.

You can do anything, just have fun while doing it.

Re: Spam bots are back?

They're back? They've been here for aaaages, maybe us mods just cleaned them up before you could see them. Just keep using the report button and we'll clean them up as fast as we can.

Oh, thanks for the reply Hazzat. Didn't know they had been around for a while. I'll report any I see. mini/smile

*bump*

Just thought I'd make a note that I have disabled new members from posting -- I now check new registrations manually every couple of days, so once I enable a new user to post they can post. This should prevent any spam in the future, though it's admittedly inconvenient for both me and new users.

Although it's inconvenient it's for the better. You should have some sort of message though because else they'd be clueless why they can't post.

Re: Spam bots are back?

Yikes.  Manual approval?  I've been there, it's a burden if you're the sole person approving/rejecting users.  Are you the only one doing it?

Re: Spam bots are back?

Maybe you can appoint some trusted members to help you. That way you take away some of your workload.

Re: Spam bots are back?

The problem is that the forum software only allows administrators to move users from one group to another. I guess I could add a couple of admins or something, most of the ones present right now aren't active on the site anymore, but it's not really desirable to have lots of those.

Maybe you could 'swap out' some moderators?
Temporarily give trusted, active members mod rights, so they can help you until the current mods become active again.

Re: Spam bots are back?

We've got plenty of moderators, I was talking about administrators. It's just a bit of a site security liability to have lots of admins.

Re: Spam bots are back?

I suppose another way to do it would be to have us mods look at the member list often and see what users aren't full of spam, again not great.

I'll mimic Hazzat and say keep reporting spam (try not to respond to it also) and we'll endeavour to vaporise it.
