When I was entering the site, I was redirected to an 8-second ad page. Is this going to be permanent? I don't mind it, because there's a skip button and all, I'm just wondering.
Sounds like maybe you have adware / spyware / malware installed on your computer that is inserting advertisements into your browser.
I could be wrong, of course, but nobody else has reported this problem and I don't think the Google ads we have on the front page are capable of making such a thing happen.

I checked, Google ads can't display those ads.
i'd say download AVG and maleware bytes and do a quick scan with both, cause, as smeag said, is most likely maleware or spyware.
