Re: OSCARS 2012 SHORTLIST

I wish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo had gotten a lot more nominations. I hope Tree of Life and Dragon Tattoo get all they can, and definitely Rooney Mara for best actress. I would like to see Rango win Best Animated and Bullhead win Best Foreign, though I haven't seen any of the other nominations. I'm pretty clueless how Bridesmaids got a writing nominee? It was not bad but hardly Oscar worthy in my eyes. Can't really say either about the other categories because I've seen too little.

Re: OSCARS 2012 SHORTLIST

I'm mostly satisfied. I thought the writing for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was awful (anyone not familiar with the original novel had no idea what was going on), and I wish Winnie The Pooh was up for Best Animated. I'm also annoyed that Terry Gilliam's The Wholly Family (I saw it on the Guardians Livestream. Its brilliant) wasn't nominated for Best Short (Live Action) - but I haven't seen the other short films, so maybe they're all incredible. The same goes with the Best Foreign Language Film category missing out The Skin I Live in...

Also, as much as I loved The Artist, I dont get why it has a nomination for Best Writing. Surely it was the Directing, Acting and music that bought out all the emotion and drama? Its kind of like nominating Pink Floyd's The Wall for Best Writing...

I'm glad The Tree of Life is nominated for Best Cinematography - something which the BAFTA's and Golden Globes stupidly ignored. Whilst it was flawed (I still really liked it though), I'm happy people have realised that the cinematography is some of the best ever committed to film. Even people who hated it says that the cinematography is jaw dropping.

I'm not doing any predictions because there are quite a few that I haven't seen (Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close and The Descendants are not even out in the UK yet...)

Re: OSCARS 2012 SHORTLIST

You mistitled Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close in the Best Picture category. I hope the Muppets win music.

Re: OSCARS 2012 SHORTLIST

Well, apparently it wasn't good enough, Ghostfm...you. Haven't seen any of the films except for The tree of Life and Midnight in Paris. I'm also really interested in The Artist, I have to watch that one. I hope it's still on theaters here.
I really can't predict anything.

Re: OSCARS 2012 SHORTLIST

what do you mean? it had a guy from the dukes of hazard in it. and look how awesome it looks

Re: OSCARS 2012 SHORTLIST

Seems about right to me mini/wink. I'm hoping for some HP recognition, for being the highest grossing film series of all time.

Used to be 'Caidence'

Re: OSCARS 2012 SHORTLIST

The adventures of Tintin should have been nominated for best animated feature . mini/sad

Re: OSCARS 2012 SHORTLIST

How Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, a film that received mixed critical response at best and had little to no showing in any of the guild or precursor awards, walks away with a Best Picture nomination over The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (which had stronger critical and precursor award support) is absolutely unforgivable (also, where is Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross for Score?). Critics really are becoming more and more irrelevant in the eyes of the Academy, it seems.

Anyways, my complaints with this list outweigh my praises. Only two Best Song nominations just feels lazy and cheap, and they chose probably the third best song from The Muppets for the award (Life's a Happy Song not only should have been nominated, but should be the clear winner). If you're not even going to make a category competitive by dignifying it with at least three nominees, then there's no real point in having it, honestly. The lack of love for Drive is also upsetting, especially the notable snub for Albert Brooks in Supporting Actor.

That said, I'm pleasantly surprised to see Moneyball recognized in a lot more categories than I expected. The sound mixing nomination is particularly nice; I thought the film utilized its soundscape in a subtle but effective manner and I'm glad to see it wasn't forgotten in favor of other, more seemingly obvious choices. Also glad to see The Tree of Life recognized, I was afraid it would get overlooked based on its mostly-absent performance in the precursors.

At any rate, this is The Artist's to lose. If I had my way, Moneyball would be a much stronger contender for top prize, but The Artist is a good enough film that I can happily throw my support towards it.

So one actor from another movie automatically makes another great? I don't see where you're going with this.

I have not seen any of the film nominations, though I would love to see Rango as Best Animated Feature.

Re: OSCARS 2012 SHORTLIST

I heard these nominations on my carpool on the way to school today and I must say I hate this selection. If I was choosing, We Bought a Zoo would be nominated for pretty much everything. That film is an underappreciated masterpiece. They didn't mention it at all! Harumph!

Re: OSCARS 2012 SHORTLIST

I'm quite suprised about the nominees. I can't believe I'm not seeing in the Best Animated Feature Tintin but I am seeing there Puss in Boots. I hope Midnight in Paris will win the Best Writing and Best Director, although it also has a chance for the Best Film. And I think the Visual Effects are going to be pretty interesting, because Harry Potter, Transformers 3 and Rise of the Planet of the Apes had all very good effects. If I'd have to choose though, it'd be probably Rise of the Planet of the Apes. And when speaking of that film, I can't believe Andy Serkis wasn't nominated.

Re: OSCARS 2012 SHORTLIST

Everyone needs to bear in mind that the average age of Academy Members is around 50ish (much older than the Golden Globe panel) - meaning edgier films such as Drive and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo are usually ignored. I do think Tintin has been snubbed from 'Best Animated' - although I'm just so overjoyed that Cars 2 has been missed off. I'm also happy Harry Potter has been mostly ignored; since I thought it was possibly the most overrated movie of the year aside from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - which is an absolute mess of a movie and only deserves a 'Best Actor' nomination.

I do fully agree that having only two best songs nominated is absolutely ridiculous. They could've have at least thrown in the song Madonna won a Golden Globe for - just to look as if they were trying...

Re: OSCARS 2012 SHORTLIST

Thanks for posting this, Onion. mini/smile

This really reminds me of how very few movies I've seen this year. mini/tongue Haha

I hope Rango wins Best Animated Film, it was my favorite out of all of the stuff I have seem this year, though, I am really rather disappointed it didn't get any sound nominations. While watching it, the sounds just really stood out to me, I thought they were fantastic! and I usually am not ever very impressed by sound while watching any movie, and rarely take note of it at all.

Oh well.

I do think Tintin has been snubbed from 'Best Animated'

It was motion capture though, I don't think it's technically considered an animated film. (Though it probably should have gotten at least a visual effects nomination)
