HTML, is pretty much the same thing as BBcode.
There's a reason why we are limited to bbcode. In fact, what more could you want out of HTML than what you already have here? You have the ability to post pictures, link text, and quote. We have the essentials, and if the option of using html was available, I doubt we'd use any other effects than the ones available to us in bbcode.
You could use html to post videos.
A while back there was discussion about this. The majority of us thought this wasn't the best idea because not everyone on the internet has a good connection, and it would slow down their connection and view of the forum.
The forum is a place for discussion, if you wanted to post a video, you simply have to post the link, which will give a person with slow connection the option to play or not. Plus, there is BBcode for youtube videos (below, yet that is a custom command), in fact, there are many different tags for bbcode, but they're limited to users.
In regards to video embedding:
We could have it right now if we so desired
but it's turned off deliberately. The Citizen of the Year is the only embeddable video (with the tag
[tcoty]
) because it's kind of a meme that it's the greatest brickfilm ever.
Yeah, we wouldn't gain anything by switching to HTML.
We don't need more forum features. The [move][/move] is bad enough.
Ah friend of mine who does a lot of programming was telling me today how BBCode is basically the same thing as HTML except with less options. Which I suppose it's better to have less options for making a forum.
Also on a completely random subject change, I miss that word filter that turned "everybody" into "everypony"
In addition to everything said here, I feel the need to point out that the ability to post with HTML would poses as security threat to the forum.

Yes. I wholeheartedly agree.
