Palefaces: Battle for Dominance
A civilization founded on peace, exploring the galaxy for scientific and technological knowledge, and general curiosity; these are the people of the Fines Magnae Pacis, the Territories of Great Peace. But on a planet called Nemus, immigrants from an unknown land have seemingly appeared out of the vast reaches of space and inhabited a planet that was home to native peoples, a few generations behind the Pacians technologically. These new peoples are known only as Dolorums; they are more advanced, more organized, more mysterious, and potentially more dangerous than anything that Pacis has ever come upon. But how can a society formed on peace possibly mistrust and defeat a group of people that lie and deceive?
Colonel Blake Serenus, Major Todd Logus, and Captain John Avium are friends from way back. They come from the military side of Pacis; they are the ones who handle situations where peace is not possible. But having finally found a more advanced civilization, can they risk knowledge for security? Landing on the planet, they meet Richard Bellator, a native, and Sergeant Mark Valorosum, of the Forest Faction. Richard refers to the Dolorums as Palefaces--a slang, an insult, derived from their one difference to the natives, the Pacians, and indeed everyone else in the galaxy. Richard insists that the Dolorums are evil, and are lying to all the people of Pacis until they can attack the heart of Pacis, and do the most damage; the Dolorums deny all of this, and it's up to the Colonel, Major, Captain, Sergeant, and Richard to find out the truth, before their way of life is destroyed. It is truly a battle for dominance.

I'm finally releasing an update thread because I just finished the first draft of the script, and I'm finally going full-steam with this thing. I have two sequels planned as well, but let's deal with that later mini/wink
This film will focus on expansive sets (mostly thanks to CGI), for the purpose of making the audience actually believe that they are on another planet, instead of in my closet. Quality in animation is one of my highest priorities as well, for this film will be rather long, and I don't want the audience to be distracted by poor animation ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOfW7Qi-E5o Comments and criticism on animation welcome and appreciated). Original soundtrack, composed and performed by me, as well as effects for all laser blasts and whatnot made entirely in GIMP, will hopefully give this film a feel of originality and creativity, and I can only hope will inspire people to not use explosion effects (c'mon guys, they look really tacky...)

Casting call will go up hopefully within a week, many big and small roles for anyone who wants to get in on this film.

Thoughts? Concerns? Suggestions? I'd love to hear what ya'll think of this! mini/smile

Intriguing story.  And when you say cgi, what software are you using?  Also, do you have a script written and has it been reviewed by any of your peers (here and locally)?

Re: Palefaces: Battle for Dominance - Update Thread

Blender and LeoCAD, still learning how to use them though. And the script has been reviewed by a friend of mine who enjoys reading and editing scripts and essays, I will certainly get more people to read it and edit it as soon as possible, might share the document on GoogleDocs on people here who want to review it. This is my first major film that doesn't have any due date, and I plan on using that luxury to my advantage.

Re: Palefaces: Battle for Dominance - Update Thread

If you're using 2.49a, then let me bring up this.  If making them realistic isn't an issue (particularly if they're going to be in the blurry background), then disregard my tips.  But do note the advantage of duplicate inheritance that comes with combining Ldraw and Blender 2.49a.

Viewing your animation, if camera movements are involved with expansive CGI sets, you may need to practice with camera match moving.

I'd be willing to assist in your digital effects.  GIMP can only do so much.

Re: Palefaces: Battle for Dominance - Update Thread

I have indeed already looked at (and bookmarked) that page, for I will indeed be making the CGI backgrounds with LEGO-shaped elements. I'll send you a PM if I need any help, thanks for offering mini/smile

Re: Palefaces: Battle for Dominance - Update Thread

The title sounds a little KKK-ish. Just sayin'.
The plotline sounds fairly solid, though I can't really figure out whether the "Palefaces" will be portrayed in a sympathetic or unsympathetic way based off of your synopsis. May just be because I live in Australia, and the country's stance on asylum seekers is a little sickening, but the idea of portraying an entire nation as people that "lie and deceve" based off of the possibility of immigrants "disrupting the peace" seems a little off. Or perhaps I'm getting a little too political about it... Maybe instead of placing characters into either "good" or "evil" categories, it would be interesting if you explored the choices that the characters are forced to make, their conflicting views and prejudices, etc. and not just heroes and villains. Plus, I don't see how a "battle" could be considered a win for a planet that is founded on the concept of peace, regardless of the outcome. Plus, they wouldn't be very well prepared for fight, would they?
These are all just suggestions, so yeah, don't want to force anything onto you, and reading over this post I think I got a little too involved with some of the themes present in the story, but still, I think considering how much time you're going to commit to this you should make sure that you don't just end up with a big pretty space-war between groups of good and bad people.

Isn't that the point though? One race fears another, and thus tries to dominate.

WELL. Indeed, one thing I realized early on is that this could be taken in a racist way, but I promise that only in the explanation does it come off as racist as it does. And indeed, as mcoov says,

Isn't that the point though? One race fears another, and thus tries to dominate.

The Palefaces are seen as a possible enemy at the beginning, based on what the natives say, but are just as much thought of as a possible ally; they are only thought of as "evil" after an "incident" with the main characters (sorry, don't want to publicly give away a big part of the story). And believe me, the battle is actually not a very large part of the story; the sequel will get a load more into the politics of the Dolorums (Palefaces), and will have a lot more space-battling, but it's really important to me that the first one establishes the characters and whatnot. I think that a lot of your questions are answered by the film itself; it's a really hard story to condense into a few paragraphs without sounding racist, unfortunately.
As for the fact that it's a battle and the society is founded on peace, well... maybe I should explain one of the big influences for this film. Stargate SG1. They explore new worlds, but for the purpose of gaining knowledge and new technologies. It's really the same thing, in a way. Just more extreme in their view of peace; but there are many hostile peoples on other planets, and absolute peace no matter the situation is not an effective basis for a society. They have a military, a strong military, in case of situations where peace isn't possible, but they will always choose peace over war.
I don't really feel like I can fully explain everything without giving away everything in the film and practically posting the script here; if you're interested (and it seems like you are), PM me and I will gladly send you a link to the script. Actually, I would love to have a few more people review the script and tell me their thoughts on the pacing, the story, and the like. Both you, Danimation, and mcoov, if you're interested, send me a PM and I will give you a link to the script. Hope I've made things a little bit clearer in this (excessively long) post!

Bump/Update
Okay I've been working on a lot of general stuff lately for Palefaces, I'll just post a few pics and explain them as I go along....

Okay here's one of my favorite pictures, really just random camera angles. This is actually from a few months ago, from a basic Forest Faction Base design that was unfortunately destroyed; it was way too simple tho, so no real loss, I just thought I'd post this pic because, well, it looks cool mini/tongue

Alright here we go, now we're really getting somewhere. Probably one of the coolest props so far, except maybe the ships which will be shown in just a few seconds, the DOLORUM BAD@$$ GUN TURRET LASER BLASTER THING. Okay so maybe I don't have an official name for this thing yet, but still. Looks awesome, no?

Okay this is a boring one, I'll admit, but I'd like to get some feedback on it, if possible. I'm trying to go for a path that the natives of the planet use, but because they don't really travel between villages much it's not an advanced path or anything... Might just go with a simple dirt path, but I'd love to hear anyone else's thoughts on the matter.

Woot, the good guys! Transport speeder in the right colors, you'll recognize the design from my Palefaces test animation; I originally made it in Paleface colors, white and transparent orange, but the script didn't really write that into the film (oops mini/shifty ) so I just remade it in Pacis colors and there ya go!

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7166/6427211751_4710160953.jpg
Here it is, the ship that really started it all, the... Well okay I never thought of a name for this ship, but no matter. This is the ship that Colonel Blake and his team take to Nemus, the planet where pretty much the whole film takes place. It really helped determine the general style of Pacis ships, so it's kinda a big deal. Made this thing probably like a year ago, but I just thought I'd post a pic of it.

So that's really it, been working on figuring out Paleface weapon designs mostly, hence the gun, and their ship design and whatnot. Also been experimenting with making planets in GIMP, might edit this post with some pics of those planets in a little while if you guys are interested. Get excited, the Palefaces are coming!!
-kcirbfilms

P.S. Anyone who wants to read the script and offer critique on it, tell me here or PM me, I'd be happy to get more thoughts and whatnot so I can finally finalize the script and get my voice actors to record their lines without worrying that they'll have to rerecord some. Also, picture of General Fortibus is up in the casting call, and I still need voice actors for him, Colonel Blake, and Richard Bellator, as well as people to play the Dolorum (Paleface) soldiers. Any and all voice actors would be greatly appreciated!!

Whoops I knew I forgot something! I have an amazing duster that gets between the studs, so in the final film there won't be any dust, I just forgot to dust this thing off before taking pictures of it... mini/sweat

Yeah, should clean they. I think it's annoying, if dust is be visible in final movie. It looks like old building or something weird and pity. But you can clean it. I had those feelings too. ;D

Re: Palefaces: Battle for Dominance - Update Thread

Looks great!

I think the path should be more like the kind AnnoyingNoisesProductions uses.  It's a bunch of tiles of the same color offset on the sides of the path.  Watch some of his films (Pirates Rule! and Mailbox of Doom) to see what I'm talking about.

Not literally dead, just no longer interested in Lego or animation.

Yes, I see what you mean. I'll try it out for sure, thanks for the suggestion!

Cool! I like the depth of field your using on the first picture.

I'm working on getting my studio back up and running, so stay posted...

Thank you! And believe me, I'm glad to have you be a part of it!

Small Update: Still need voice actors for Blake, Richard, and General Fortibus, anyone who's interested please check out the casting call! And the script will hopefully be finalized very very soon, just need to get in touch with a few people and then lines should be able to start being recorded (to all voice actors, I'll send out a PM to you all to let you know); still filming basic tests and whatnot, hopefully I'll start doing tests more relevant to Palefaces in about a week. Hoping to really get this film going over the break, I'm getting money for bricklink orders for Xmas, and then I should really be able to start production on Palefaces: Battle for Dominance. They're already on Nemus, we just don't know it yet. Be afraid, be excited, but peace is not an option; the only thing to do now is fight!
