Topic: What Are YOUR Favorite Old Black and White Movies?

Fact: Old black and white movies are awesome. Here are my some of my favorites:

The Man Who Came To Dinner
Duck Soup, A Night At the Opera, A Day At the Races, Horse Feathers, Go West, etc.
Road To Morocco, Road To Utopia, Road To Rio
My Favorite Blonde, My Favorite Brunette
The Lemon Drop Kid
The Great Dictator, City Lights, Gold Rush, Modern Times, Shoulder Arms
Bringing Up Baby
Arsenic and Old Lace
Gunga Din
Harvey
Destry Rides Again
The Philadelphia Story
Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
It's a Wonderful Life
The Thin Man, After the Thin Man, Another Thin Man, The Thin Man Goes Home

Ninotchka
The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer

I loves me some old-time screwball comedies.

Bonus: My favorite old-time actor: James Stuart. William Powell was wicked cool, too.

Smoking marijuana, eating Cheez Doodles, and masterfully debating do not constitute 'plans' in my book - Walter 'Heisenberg' White

ANYTHING with Charlie Chaplin, easily.  I've also come to like the work of Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton, though I haven't seen much of their work.

I very very much enjoy German Expressionist films, especially The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

I really need to see more black and white films.  I'll think I'll use your list as a guide.

Re: What Are YOUR Favorite Old Black and White Movies?

The only one I can remember seeing is the old Frankenstein film.

The Elephant Man

Re: What Are YOUR Favorite Old Black and White Movies?

Definitely Duck Soup.  Mirror scene, soda cart scene, the best of The Four Marx Brothers.

That goes for me too!  I haven't seen much Harold Llyod, but some Buster Keaton films I highly reccomend are 'The General,' 'Sherlock Jr,' 'Neighbors,' 'Steamboat Bill Jr,' and 'One Week.'

a list of some of my favorites off the top of my head:

King Kong
20 Million Miles to Earth
Casablanca
It's a Wonderful Life
Psycho
Sunset Blvrd.
The Phantom of the Opera (Lon Channey version)
A Hard Day's Night
Douglas Fairbank's Zorro

(This block is all Charlie Chaplin)
One A.M.
The Immigrant
Shoulder Arms
Easy Street
Sunnyside
The Idle Class
The Kid
The Gold Rush
The Circus
City Lights
Modern Times
The Great Dictator
Monsieur Verdoux
Lime Light
A King in New York

(This Block is all Buster Keaton)
One Week
Neighbors
The Playhouse
Cops
The Pale Face
Sherlock Jr.
The General
Steamboat Bill Jr.

I'm sure this will be expanded upon as more films come to my head.  Old black and white films can be very entertaining, and tend to have a unique and cool feel to them.  It can be a great stylistic choice for films nowadays to go black and white, but it is sadly rarely used.

Blast from the Past? Or Beleaguered Mediocrity from the Past?

Re: What Are YOUR Favorite Old Black and White Movies?

Everyone should see Bicycle Thieves by Vittorio De Sica.

Re: What Are YOUR Favorite Old Black and White Movies?

Easily Sunset Blvrd. one of the best movies ever

Dr. Strangelove is always fun
The Third Man is a really great Noir
Double Indemnity is good fun
Citizen Kane is an obvious choice (but it's no Sunset Blvrd)
A Roman Holiday is impossible not to love
