Re: The Squire and the Scroll

WOAH!  You guys are good!  Like you said, I enjoy how it looks like the Disneyland castle, but it isn't, enough to seem like a true medieval castle.

If you wanted it to look more realistic, I would suggest adding some Lego foliage such as vines or leaves around the bottom part by the water.  Most castles are centuries old and unless this castle is supposed to be newly built in your film, you should try to age it visibly a bit.  Otherwise, an amazing job as usual.  mini/wink

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

I'm sure this is gonna be an amazing brickfilm! Everything I've seen and read looked very promising! I'm really looking forward to this. mini/smile
The castle prop is very good, but I don't really like the walls which clearly 'suffer from' the "Big Gray Wall" syndrome. mini/sad
But further it all looks great. Keep us updated!

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

That's an amazing castle; you really packed in a ton of detail. Exactly how big is your brick collection?

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

That's a great castle!

I think just a few more details will make it perfect. You could mix in some dark bley, light grey, dark grey, and grey lined bricks for an old and worn look. You could also add some vines and possibly a few more windows. I think it especially needs  more detail on the lower part of the outer walls and the tall towers.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

Holy moly! Well that's something, I gotta say - I'm definitely looking forward to this film, your work for the past few months has been great! So I hope to see this great film out soon, though I don't expect is out so soon, since it really seems like you have a lot of hard work to do. Otherwise, everything looks great so far! I think this is going to be your masterpiece! mini/smile

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

Is it a backdrop, or a working set?

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

I just found this thread. Thank-you for doing the work necessary to put together a film on this scale. You're an inspiration to us all! Is there an After Effects tutorial for the dragon fire you've done? It looks awesome! And the castle is magnificent!

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

I'm out of my mind, this is ******* amazing. So I love it for first look! Grazy... mini/smile mini/wink

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

*Update* (yes, we remembered)

First off, we’ll respond to all the questions and critiques:

jstudios wrote:

You guys have to make some tutorials soon…

We are planning on making an entire series of tutorials on all the aspects of this film when we are done, but we don’t plan on making any until then.

Binding Brick wrote:

Or are you not using colour correction?

We were not using color-correction in that particular picture, but in the film everything will definitely be color-corrected.

The idea of the foliage and leaves by the water is something we already thought of doing and are going to do, but thanks for trying to help us out.  We appreciate it.  As for making the castle seem old however, in the film the castle is still occupied and not necessarily very old.  Not to mention the fact that the mystical lantern that resides in the topmost tower probably keeps it pretty clean as well. mini/wink

As we mentioned above, the castle is new and kept clean, so there would not be a lot of wear on the walls.  However, we may add some stones or something to some of them to add some color variety.

Roughly 250 pounds and rising. mini/smile

It is probable that the release date will be pushed back to around next Christmas or so, since everything in this film seems to take longer than expected (and we always seem to have less time to work on it than expected).

A working set.  We most likely would not put this much detail into a backdrop. mini/wink

Samwise wrote:

We partially based it on several tutorials and then messed around with things until we got the right look.  However, as we mentioned above, once this film is over, we will be releasing quite a few tutorials on how we did the effects/props/animation/etc. in this film.

Your math is right, and you’re reading it. mini/wink

Now, for the actual update.

Since last post we have built some new props and animated about another 20 seconds of footage.  We have also been tinkering around with camera rigs and designed one ourselves (with the help of our dad).  Here are some pictures of our custom “zoom” rig:
(Also, please note that these pictures were taken in the “playroom” of our younger siblings, so there are toys strewn about that we were too lazy to crop out.)

It is capable of "zoom-panning" up to 10 feet in either direction, and you can measure the increments by using a yardstick, large ruler, or tape-measure.

Thanks for all the critique guys!  It really inspires us and helps us to make the film better.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

Wow. By the way, I think I just read a book that sounds a lot like what you are making... mini/eh And it is called "The Squire and the Scroll".

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

Wow! The zoom rig looks great! Is it a modification of FinalCutKing's homemade pan rig, or is it all your design?

If you read their first post, it explains that their film is an adaptation of the book.

Ah, thank you. It is the same book.

Bricklink, methinks.

Either that, or they have a BIG Lego collection.

It is all our own design.  To tell you the truth, we were not even aware of FinalCutKing's rig.

Well, since our last post we have been continuing to work on the forest scene, and have been learning and utilizing many new techniques as well.  In fact, while we are writing this post we are actually in the process of setting up another shot in the forest.

For today's update in fact, we have decided to do a break-down of a single shot in "The Squire and the Scroll."  This summarizes some of the most important effects that we apply to some of our shots.  Here it is:

(1) Original Shot

(2) Color-Correction and Brightness Turned Down
