Re: The Squire and the Scroll

*Update (apparently bi-annual)*

Well, while we can't say that a wait this long for an update is entirely warranted, we do have our reasons for delaying.  However, we have been spending an enormous amount of time animating.  In fact, just yesterday we officially finished the animation portion of the film!  Now all we have to do is finish the VFX, editing, sound design, music, and all that fun stuff.  It is definitely exciting to be moving onto a new part of the film, and we will hopefully be posting pictures of our progress here more frequently as we continue to work.

As a bonus since it has been so long since our last update, we thought it would be fitting to release a short teaser showcasing some of the visual effects that we have been working on.  Please note that none of the visual effects in the trailer are necessarily finished.  You can view this trailer here!

Well, that's about it for this update.  We're sorry we don't have any pictures to show at the moment, but hopefully the teaser will appease you for the time being.  As for the next update, we will try to go back to getting an update out once or twice a month.  Whether or not that will happen though is yet to be seen (fingers crossed!).

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

Looks very nice!
The music had a very LOTR feel. (More the first half really)
The effects look very professional and everything that I've seen on this film has been top-notch.
It's great to hear that the animating is done. That's usually the roughest patch, and once that's over, most guys can manage to power through the rest.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

That looked beautiful! Like Pritchard, I love the effects and how well they are incorporated into the film.
I also enjoyed the music.
And I can't wait to see the final product, as it's sure to be epic. Glad to here you've completed a big step towards the end. Keep it up! mini/bigsmile

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

Just to quickly clarify, the music in this trailer is not our own, it is in fact a trailer song that we used because it fit the mood of the trailer.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

ok, do you need a composer? I am very happy to make a score, or part of one for such an awesome project....

Thanks, but no, we actually do have a composer, we just didn't ask him to write music for this teaser.  He did write the music for the first trailer though, so if you want to hear his work then you can watch that.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

Wow, this is coming along nicely. I'm not gonna bug you guys with "wahowh! when's this gonna come out? olol", but I did just want to say "great job, this is looking excellent".

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

This brickfilm is going to be so amazing!

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

*Update*

Whelp.  It's that time of day (more like year at this point actually) again - time for another update!  Since our last update, we have been creating rough-cuts of all the scenes in the movie, and are in the process of creating a final-rough-cut (not even sure if that is a real thing).  As well, we have also been working on developing some of the more difficult VFX in the film (not that any of them are really that easy mini/wink ).  Here is a pic from one of our latest tests:

Lesson learned?  Rendering roughly two million particles with motion blur is harder on my computer than I thought. mini/tongue

Also, as most of you probably know, the primary antagonist in this film is a dragon.  You probably also remember that this dragon is going to be completely digital, since animating it with standard stop-motion would prove to be too difficult and time consuming.  Well, back in November of 2011 we posted a picture of our first draft of the dragon.  Here is the picture again for those of you who don't remember:

http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BuilderBrothers/tSatS/dragonpicrendertest1.png

Why are we posting this again you might ask?  Well, the reason is that we recently finished creating the second draft for the dragon!  We went in and completely redid everything, from the joints to the design.  After tripling the amount of joints and bricks, as well as many sweat-filled hours of designing and redesigning, here is dragon 2.0:

(You can click for a higher quality image.)

As you can probably see, this dragon is both bigger and (we hope) scarier than the last dragon.  It also moves more realistically (hence the added joints).  You also may notice that the textures are a bit more realistic than our last dragon.  We have been spending a lot of time trying to emulate  the look of LEGO bricks, and while we may not have it down quite yet, we are trying diligently to get there. mini/smile  Here is a quick little GIF for those of you who were wondering what the dragon looks like in different stages of rendering:

http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BuilderBrothers/tSatS/dragonanimation.gif

The order of images in the animation is Wireframe/Joints -> Camera Angle/Rough Lighting -> First Test Render -> Final Render with advanced reflections.

Well, that's it for this update.  We hope that the size of this update will make up for the fact that we haven't made one in a while.  After all, during this stage of development we don't want to reveal too much. mini/wink  Thanks for all the support guys, and please let us know what you think of the new dragon!

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

I really like the overall look! Much more better than its predessecor!

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

I really like the design of the dragon, and the brick textures look pretty darn good guys, although now you have the LEGO Movie to live up to. mini/tongue

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

You are doing really well with this.  Seems a bit too digital for my usual tastes, but you guys seem to really be going really far, which is really cool.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

"I am fire...I am death." mini/devil
Oh wait, wrong movie dragon.

Still, that is pretty amazing. The design is great, then textures look much better, and I just know it's going to look stupendous. Any chance of seeing it in action soon?

Everything looks so awesome, can't wait!

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

I'm lovin' that dragon. The lego texturing/material looks quite realistic. Can't wait for this movie!

That dragon is beautiful. mini/twitch

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

Thanks for all the comments guys!  However, before anyone says anything else, we realized that we forgot to mention that just as the first dragon was inspired by this LEGO model, so this dragon was also inspired by this model.  As we did not have instructions to follow though (only the pictures posted), our dragon is only roughly based off his, as most of the joints and structures of such elements as the legs, head, and claws were too blurry in his pictures to make too much sense of.  However, the shape of our dragon and the overall design we owe to this guy, and he is going to be in the credits of the film for sure. mini/smile  Sorry we didn't mention this in the original post, but we wanted to get the pictures up so quickly that we didn't double check it before we posted!

Sorry, but you won't be seeing this baby in action until the movie comes out, and if that's what you meant by 'seeing it in action soon,' then expect to see the dragon in action in (hopefully) August of this year. mini/smile

Thanks!  Also, just so that you know, the dragon will look a lot less digital once it is in its respective environment and lit to match the scene around it.  Right now it looks really digital because it is in a totally white environment, but (hopefully) when it is reflecting the actual scene it will look more believable.
