Topic: Canon powershots?

Just wonder guys if you recommend the smaller Canon Powershot cameras for brickfilming. I know Smeagol uses one. Do you know if you can connect them to your computer and get a live view? I tested out one at Target today and the focus and picture quality seems to be very good. It went up to a little over 14 mp.

BUMP: Just found another thread for this but it didn't answer my question.

Bump: Anyone?

I have a Powershot G1 and G9. There good, but I recommend an S-series with liveview (if it has capture software?)

Are the A series any good?

Apparently, Nathan Wells uses an A85, so I'd say so.

Re: Canon powershots?

No they aren't.
Live view is so incredibly small (320 x 240) that you can't even take advantage of onion skinning, and you have ZERO control of the focus. The only option to control it is to tell the camera to auto-focus and then lock it. Trust me, the C910/9000 are a better choice by far for animating.
(That is, if you haven't got a good camcorder or a DSLR at your disposal)

PS: And you can only use a small selection of older models for tethered shooting! Don't assume you'll be able to connect that cam you saw at target to your PC! Because it won't work.

Here's a full list of cameras that work with a PC: http://www.breezesys.com/PSRemote/features.htm#ps

But still, the life view will be REALLY REALLY small, so... I wouldn't say they are a good choice. Better to buy one of the top-class webcams and then save up for a nice camcorder or DSLR that supports remote capture.

Re: Canon powershots?

I also, am an owner of a G9 and there is capturing software. It was once available, and I have it on my computer. You can shoot at it's full resolution and control all the settings. However they later stopped this. When I get home I will be able to distribute the .exe file. With that file you will also be able to use it with stop motion programs.

I can use it with software, too. But the point is: life view's so small it doesn't even make sense.

And not being able to control the focus is very uncomfortable, too.

Re: Canon powershots?

Well I probably won'y buy one. And if I do it probably won't be for brickfilming.
