Topic: Matte Painting

I think it's about time we discussed experimental brickfilming techniques. If you don't know what matte paintings are, take a quick look at the Wikipedia page on the topic. Basically, matte painting is a technique filmmakers use to extend their shots or add in additional elements that weren't in the original shot. I've used this a couple times actually, both in Pancake Island and Viva La Vida.

In this shot of Pancake Island, I used it to create a dark hallway. The below pictures shows how the hallway was created.

This is the original frame, with no painting added.

I imported the frame into Photoshop where I cropped around the door so that everything else was deleted. Using the pen tool and brushes, I painted over the door to make it solid black and give the illusion of a dark interior. Below is the painting.

I could then import this into my video editor and place it on top of the animated clip, which is what you see in the film.

Although this particular effect could be created with lighting, by using matte painting I was able to get it to look exactly how I wanted. There's many more applications for this, what I did was relatively simple. Experiment with it to make huge cityscapes and other places you couldn't normally make.

Re: Matte Painting

Isn't this similar to rotoscoping?

Re: Matte Painting

Rotoscoping is tracing something, usually manually, for the purpose of compositing something into the shot.  I guess one could say he rotoscoped the outline of the door, though rotoscoping tends to imply a more frame-by-frame process.

Some of my films have little set extensions like this as well, though generally not as subtle.  It's a cool effect, NXT!

That's pretty cool. mini/smile
I'm wondering, though, how you you make a big city scape?
I want to make an epic Batman film, so the idea of huge shots of Gotham City intrigues me very much.

Re: Matte Painting

Smeagol, that's probably one of my favourite effects in Unrenewable.

ANP, you could do a couple things. You could try to use 3D programs to build the city, then create a matte painting with it. Another technique you could use would be to build smaller scale buildings one at a time, then composite them together and make a matte painting from that.

Re: Matte Painting

I'm thinking of doing some small building stuff for when they're completely out of focus actually. mini/smile

But, one thing that I don't know how to do is simple onion skin effects. I understand how it works, but I've never found out how exactly to do it properly. For now, I've been creating an extra picture and painting blue in the areas I have people moving and such, then I put it over my footage and add a blue screen key, but it adds this somewhat annoying line at the edges. mini/tongue

Re: Matte Painting

You say onion skin, yet the technique you mention is blue screening.

Instead of painting parts of it blue, try using .png files. When you make your backgrounds (in Photoshop) and export as a png, any pixels that aren't occupied will be transparent, which means you can just plop it onto your footage and not have any white spots.

Re: Matte Painting

Yes, matte painting is an awesome effect; I'll have to make sure to try it in some of our films requiring extensive sets. And speaking of rotoscoping, does anyone know how to get a clean sillouete(?) of a minifigure? I've tried for the better part of two years, and have not succeded at all.

Re: Matte Painting

So basically, you're just drawing black over that part of the set? @JP I'm not sure, but I think this is what you're talking about.

Point your light at your camera and put the fig inbetween.

I also painted a door, but yes, it was pretty simple. However, as seen by Smeagol's work with it, it can prove to be incredibly useful.

Yeah, basically, I was imitating it with a blue screen effect.

And thanks a bunch! mini/bigsmile I've really been wanting to know how to do that for a while.

Re: Matte Painting

This matte painting is scarcely as impressive as the previous two

When filming Coffee With The General I was taking still exterior shots and since it was cramped I couldn't frame the the shots properly to fit the rather wide aspect ratio I was using. So I had to shrink the photo but that would leave gaps at the side but since I had used plants in the foreground it allowed me to expand the plants to fit the aspect ratio (most of what I added turned out to be black in the end so it would be similar to leaving the gaps there anyway)

Similar to what NX did, I also had small gaps between the bricks where you could see the blue background leaking in so I patched those up too. The last frame is the colour corrected shot that appears in the film.

If I thought about this in advance what I would have done is taken the photo without the plants then subsequently took photo of the plants on their own and cut them out and then I would have done the digital zoom in on the two different layers at different speeds and this would have added a 3D feel to the shot.

I've got a question about the ripple the boat makes in the water.
Is the water an actual fluid simulation? Or is it made with bump maps.

I've wondered the same exact thing.

Re: Matte Painting

NXT, what video editing program do you use?

Re: Matte Painting

He uses Photoshop.

Re: Matte Painting

I mean what program does he use to overlay the edited picture into the video?

Re: Matte Painting

I use Final Cut for video editing. I'm not sure what you use, but it should be able to handle .png transparencies.

Nice work, RP! mini/bigsmile
