Topic: Matte Painting
I think it's about time we discussed experimental brickfilming techniques. If you don't know what matte paintings are, take a quick look at the Wikipedia page on the topic. Basically, matte painting is a technique filmmakers use to extend their shots or add in additional elements that weren't in the original shot. I've used this a couple times actually, both in Pancake Island and Viva La Vida.
In this shot of Pancake Island, I used it to create a dark hallway. The below pictures shows how the hallway was created.
This is the original frame, with no painting added.
I imported the frame into Photoshop where I cropped around the door so that everything else was deleted. Using the pen tool and brushes, I painted over the door to make it solid black and give the illusion of a dark interior. Below is the painting.
I could then import this into my video editor and place it on top of the animated clip, which is what you see in the film.
Although this particular effect could be created with lighting, by using matte painting I was able to get it to look exactly how I wanted. There's many more applications for this, what I did was relatively simple. Experiment with it to make huge cityscapes and other places you couldn't normally make.
