Topic: Best Animated Feature Oscar Discussion

From what I've been seeing and hearing, the entries for Best Animated Feature for the 2009 Academy Awards are all fighting to win. They seem to be all fighting valiantly. I saw Ponyo and Up and they were great. I need to see A Christmas Carol, The Princess and the Frog, and Fantastic Mr. Fox to gain a full knowing of all of them. So guys and girls, who do you think will win the Oscar and why?

My preference is for Up. It was great in so many ways. The music, and plot had such a deep meaning that could not stop grasping my ming. I loved that movie.

Up wins it by a mile, with the only possible upsets being Coraline or Fantastic Mr. Fox. Pixar pretty much has a monopoly on this category, and this year should continue the tradition.

The real question is, with Best Picture expanding from 5 nominees to 10 this year, does Up have a chance of scoring a nod there?

Hm...I would put Up and Coraline as being the most likely to win it,with 9 being a bit of  dark horse.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is a great film.

Anyway, definitely Up. I'd also bet on a Best Picture nod.

Up had an amazing, amazing start. In fact, the start of that film is some of the best story telling I have ever seen. Ever.

But after that? Clearly the guys at Pixar have no limits in terms of what the audience will allow them to do. The suspension of disbelief for that film is beyond anything I've seen put up with elsewhere. Not even including the flying house.

But I digress. In the end, Up will win the Oscar. I'm much more interested in who takes the Annie award, as after 2008 I view that as a much more objective and animation-centered award. I've yet to see Fantastic Mr. Fox which I hear is amazing, but so far my top animated film has been The Secret of Kells. Though it did get a little too cute at times and I doubt it has much chance of winning anything.

Well, with Up having such a high chance of being nominated for Best Film, I would be surprised to not see it win Best Animated Film. I actually haven't seen any other animated film this year, so I can't really compare.

Here's a list of all the animated films made this year, since the post up at the top really bugs me due to the lack of contenders. Please note that even though this list seems to omit some films, there is a list of 2009 animated films "yet" to be released, just below.

Well, the film definitely is more fairy tale-ish than strictly reality. It doesn't ever pretend to be a gritty, realistic film. From the start it's very whimsical.

It doesn't have to pretend to be a gritty realistic film. It does however have to take at least a few things into consideration. Even fairy tales need some kind of reality to draw on. I mean, I didn't mind the flying house, I hated the 120 year old man they found who looked younger than Karl. I didn't mind the talking dogs, I hated the flying dogs. I could go on, but I won't.

I think Fantastic Mr. Fox could be a serious contender for the best animated film.  Up was great as well, and I wouldn't be surprised if it won, but I personally thought Fantastic Mr. Fox was a better film.  The rules in the world it presents just seemed a little more 'set' than what Up presented, and I also believe that Fantastic Mr. Fox broke more new ground in the terms of animation, cinematography and camera work for stop-motion than Up did for CGI.  I loved Coraline, though I don't think it will win, and I haven't seen any other animated film that I can think of this year.
