I want to download GIMP but I just want to get a second opinion making sure it is safe for my computer. It is a new dell laptop running with Vista. Has anyone had any problems?

I've heard a few cases of the newest version acting weird on start up, but I believe that was on the Mac version, and I don't know any specifics about the issues.
I've been running an older version of Gimp for some time now and it's a great editing tool, as Stud said.
I downloaded Gimp trying to mask is confusing as hell. Yes I am watching tutorials but still im having trouble
EDIT:
I figured it out myself seems as though the tutorials on youtube had extra stuff that was uneeded.
