Topic: Anyone know where I can get a free copy of Linux

I already have Sun VirtualBox, I just need a downloadable version of Linux

Re: Anyone know where I can get a free copy of Linux

This thread fails in all ways of life, Linux is not an OS.

1) I have never heard of a "not free" version of a Linux-Based OS, elaborate
2) Linux is not an OS. Its a Kernel. That is why you will always hear me say "Linux-Based OS"
3) You'll need an OS, possibly Ubuntu or FreeBSD

Re: Anyone know where I can get a free copy of Linux

There are many distributions of Linux, Ive tried a few and have always gone back to Windows because its easier to use. Recently however I have downloaded Ubuntu and this is really easy to setup. I would recommend you to try it. Just download the .iso file, burn it to a CD and then install it. Its free from this link.

As an alternative if your PC or laptop can boot from a USB stick (most modern ones can do you just need to adjust the bios settings) You can install Linux on a USB stick and just pop it in when you want a change from windows. When you want to return to windows, remove the USB stick and reboot your machine. It works great. See the following link for more details:-

Most Linux distributions are free, I don't recommend you getting Linux as it only has very few benefits over Windows, it's more complicated to use and there are many distros to choose from.

Re: Anyone know where I can get a free copy of Linux

If you're going to get Linux, get Ubuntu like martin said. It's probably the easiest to use.

Re: Anyone know where I can get a free copy of Linux

I'd give Linux a go. Ubuntu is a good start, or perhaps PCLOS. Or Mandriva.
You can get the distro downloads from their respective websites.

Why does everyone think that?
Linux is not an OS. Its an OS KERNEL!

Operating Systems that use it are not Linux, they are LINUX BASED operating systems.

Re: Anyone know where I can get a free copy of Linux

When referring to Linux one is usually referring to a distribution of Linux.

Yes, I will admit it. I do not pay for free software.
Please don't judge me.

Fib, if you can't reply to a computer topic without branding the person as 'fail' because they've said something you find wrong and being generally obnoxious, then do us a favour in future and keep quiet. Not all members here are as computer savvy as some of us and have genuine questions, and you sir are being plain rude to them.

Yes, Linux is the kernel, but it is also the accepted generic term for any OS that's built from that kernel. You don't see people jumping down others' throats because they refer to Windows as PC even though it's technically incorrect, so lay off. mini/madhead

Thought for the day.........

I'm Sorry but your all wrong (including me!)  Linux is not an operating system its a way of life. By downloading and installing you have done the following:-

Abandoned the greasy capitalist elevator and embraced the world where you give away things for free for the benefit of others.

Decided to actually learn what makes your computer tick rather than just having your head in the sand.

Won't constantly complain that its not as easy to use as Windows, but its still a work in progress.

Well, there goes any motivation of mine to download Linux . . .

Re: Anyone know where I can get a free copy of Linux

That was nicely put Mr Price.

I think I'll throw this in here too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwL0G9wK8j4 Inspiring in a funny sort of way.

And yes, don't be pedantic about calling a Linux based distro 'Linux.' Or I may get pedantic that you mentioned FreeBSD as a Linux based OS when it's actually based on BSD Unix. Just a thought. mini/tongue
