Just a note to say a computer doesn't slow down due to how many files are stored on the hard drive. Disk space and memory are different.
If the Hard drive is jammed full, it may stall a little or even crash, but this is unlikely with the size of modern drives.
Computer memory (RAM) is allocated and released as programs open and close, so unless you have lots of programs running this is again unlikely to be an issue. Powering off your PC completely wipes this memory.
You could always back up your files to a CD or DVD disk. a CD stores around 720mb of data, so unless you have a lot of frames one disk should be enough! another option is using a USB stick.
The advice to trash your still frames may not be a good idea. Your final animation will most likely be compressed by DIVX or quicktime. This stores the frames in lossy format . If in the future you want to remaster your work in the latest format you cannot use this as the quality be awfull. If you have the originals, you have a pure source of your work.
