okay so is there a program where i can import my bricksmith files then export them as .3ds on a mac
I found LDview and then export my model as a stl.
I can still import it in to blender but my model comes out gray with no colors
So How can I fix this
or is there a program out there that can convert stl into .3ds before I use blender
I have an unofficial build of that program with the 3ds export enabled, but they now have an official beta with the option included. In my experience though .3ds meshes are a complete pain in the backside (they have more holes in them than Swiss cheese) - I ended up building the parts from scratch.
As for the colours, I'd just add them in Blender/3DS Max since there's better control over the material properties. I'm still working on how to do the face though.

Ah, I have that exact same problem and I've not figured the reason for it yet. Probably Python isn't installed on my mac. Though I recall it working on my Vista laptop, so it may be a mac-specific problem. .stl is the only one that works so I stick with that (just be sure to select all the mesh in Edit Mode and use the Remove Doubles command to plug the holes).
So how can I color in Blender?
Okay...you go into the bottom buttons window after you have the object you want to color selected, and click the small button with the sphere on it near where it says edit\object mode. Then you click add new, and click on the little bar in the first panel, then you can change you color to whatever you want. Simple.
How can I color specific ares a certain color
You have to change the color of it in MLCad or Bricksmith itself, otherwise, they will all be the same color when you change it. Then, when they are each different colors when you export it, in Blender it will only change the colors that were all that color in MLCad or Bricksmith.
1-Build what you want in MLCad
2-Save
3-Open this save in LeoCad
4-Export as 3ds
5-Open it in Blender
Then you are done!
