Re: Brawl 2009 Has Ended! (Results in First Post)

Come 'on Daragh don't give up! There must be some way! What's your editing program?

Re: Brawl 2009 Has Ended! (Results in First Post)

Okay, I'm up. According to the clock on my computer, there's about 7 minutes until the contest ends. After that, I'll check the rest of the entries I have in my email and PM inboxes, and post the names of the eligible people in the first post. Should take me no more than an hour and a half.

Normally, the contest would be over by now, but I see there are a few people still compressing, so I'm going to extend the deadline. You now have until the 25th minute of this hour to send your films in to me.

Can we release films now?

Re: Brawl 2009 Has Ended! (Results in First Post)

You guys can release your films now, but I prefer you wait a little to be fair to the people that haven't finished compressing/uploading their films.

Okay, BRAWL 2009 is officially over. No more entries will be recieved at this time (except for Daragh's, since his film is taking a while to upload). I'll start checking entries soon, and I'll announce when I've checked all of them.

Re: Brawl 2009 Has Ended! (Results in First Post)

I gave up. This week was really busy, and I really had no time to animate. Having said that, I'm quite likely to finish it off at a later date.

Time to watch the other entries.

Re: Brawl 2009 Has Ended! (Results in First Post)

Ok, I am done checking all the films. All together, there are 19 entries in this contest, 8 more than there were last year. I will start the judging process in a day or two. In the meantime, enjoy all the entries.

Thanks to anyone who participated in this contest, either by making a film (whether it got in or didn't), helping someone with their film, or offering to judge. Without all of you, this contest wouldn't be possible.

I think it's kinda stupid how filmyguy's entry doesn't get accepted just because of the size of the file.

I'm not going to download a 146 MB file just to watch a 3 minute film. Filmyguy didn't even read the part of the first post about the file size rules. If the problem was that he was having trouble compressing the film down to a reasonable size, I would have helped with that (like I did with Daragh's film). I'm willing to be a bit forigiving with the size of people's films, but you can't completely ignore important information in the first post, send me a film with a rediculous file size, and expect me to download, watch, and check the mod elements in it. I'm sorry he couldn't have entered, but that's just the way things are.

If you disqualify films for reasons you never listed before it really sets a poor precedent and it's going to scare people away from entering in the future, I know I would avoid a contest that is run this way and even warn others to do the same.

I did list it, right in the first post.

In the very first post of this thread, I wrote:

include a link to the small
version of the film (5 megabytes per minute or less).

I'll admit, maybe 5 MB per minute is a bit too strict for the longer films that come out of this contest, and maybe I should have lightened it, but I would expect people to compress their films even a little bit before sending them to me.

Re: Brawl 2009 Has Ended! (Results in First Post)

To clear this up, I read:

146 MB for a 3 minute film is just way too much, even if there was no file size limit.

and an inaccurate statement from filmguy saying no filesize rule was specified and assumed there wasn't one since you both appeared to agree on that.  Then I checked the first post, saw that there was, and deleted my post, hence you responding to a post that isn't there anymore.

I agree that the rule seems not necessary (why not just confirm eligibility of entries after they're posted, so people could upload them to youtube or whatever, within a certain time window) but it was made clear from the start so I can't really condemn the decision to enforce the rules strictly, even if I would prefer some lenience in cases like this.  (FYI There is a fair amount of compression on that video, if it were uncompressed it'd be much larger than 146 mb)

I remember on THAC that the two times I participated, I knew getting compression right would be a challenge and left myself at least an hour to compress.  With The Pepperonis I checked my calculations several times as I was quite tired and it definitely wasn't easy to get the filesize where it was supposed to be.

That's my $0.02.  Obviously BRAWL isn't BiM affiliated, and Munzapoppa can do whatever he wants.

I have to agree with Munzapoppa on this one. He has proven to be mild and understanding as he helped with Daraghs film who had also some trouble compressing. Also the 5MB per minute is strict but if it is 7 per minute or so, I am sure that Munz wouldn't mind. But 146MB for a film is honestly too big. My film was 6:30 min. long and I managed to get it to a 50MB filesize with still good quality. For Munz I compressed it even more to 20MB. The quality was bad but at least I was sure I made the entry and later on I was able to upload better filesizes. Which is allowed. And everybody else made it to that 5MB for compression. Jimmybob and Darkman's entry was over 9 min and they even made it!  Filmyguy could have done the same.
I feel bad for Filmyguy and I wish I was able to help him, but alas these are the rules.

Re: Brawl 2009 Has Ended! (Results in First Post)

Okay, so how will the judging be done? Public vote or judges? Or maybe both?

Re: Brawl 2009 Has Ended! (Results in First Post)

To answer all three of your posts mini/wink, I think I'm going to stick with what I did last year and do judge voting first, which will narrow it down to 5 films, and then the public vote will decide who ultimately wins.
