There was a danger nothing much would happen this year as 2008 seems like such a distant memory.
As subjective as this stuff gets I think you should have taken a bit more care with the nominations.
Many I agree with but there was some obvious fails. For example:
  Best set design - Playback
  Best screenplay - Horse
The final straw was Natham's nomination in best set design.
I love that film but wasn't he commissioned by Lego to make it?
Maybe you should include the Lego Town brickfilms then as they were friggin awesome.
I wonder how many awards Phillip will take?

I don't think I've seen Playback.
Horse was hilarious in its writing and in voices as well. I think it deserves just a nomination though.
Nathan's set were beautiful, that has nothing to do with who told him to make it. Good sets are good sets.

Re: The 2008 Bricks In Motion Awards Nominations [CLOSED]

I don't agree 100% with all the nominations (my biggest gripe would be that I expected some of Keshen's work to get an animation nomination), but those three examples in particular I definitely support even if not all of them were on my ballot -- they're far from "obvious fails."  Playback has a large-scale set, which sets it apart from most brickfilms, both visually and from a difficulty standpoint, and it is well done - I would say the complex, articulated character design may have been a consideration there as well, given the construction of the characters goes beyond the standard use of minifigures.

Horse is a short but tight, well-written comedy, certainly there are bigger projects that might have taken more effort but they're not necessarily better -- it makes sense to me not to try to limit screenplay to longer films because these often tend to have more problems.

And as has been said, Nathan built all the sets for his film himself, they're huge and highly detailed, mostly relying on original designs.  That a LEGO-affiliated website commissioned the film doesn't really make any difference to me.  My understanding is that they basically said to make a tribute to the minifig and let him go from there.

It's probably worth noting that all of the people voting in this were brickfilmers, a bit like the Academy Awards are decided by filmmakers.  I would expect that our collective tastes might vary somewhat from the public.

Re: The 2008 Bricks In Motion Awards Nominations [CLOSED]

So, I assume we're going to have another one of these in 5-6 months for the films of 2009? Anyway, I can see Chris Salt winning for Best Animation, and Maxime Marion for Best Screenplay, and possibly Best Film. Other than that, I don't really know who is going to win the other categories.

I'm hoping the 2009 Awards will be in the winter, Graeme, so yes, 5 or 6 months until this comes around again.

When you see a list like that it is obvious that 2008 was a great year for Brickfilms. Many I've watched before but there was some on the list that were new to me. It would have been better with some links. Oh and a comedy category would have been cool too.

Re: The 2008 Bricks In Motion Awards Nominations [CLOSED]

As far as a comedy category is concerned, I don't really like that idea because I think a comedy should be considered for "Best Film" if it's good.  After all, two of the four "Best Film" nominees would definitely be classified as comedies IMO.

I was kinda hoping Assassin would get a nomination for the twist... I was pretty proud of that.

Still, I'm glad to see that all the nominees are deserving.

Best Score 2009... There's a change for me there.

Re: The 2008 Bricks In Motion Awards Nominations [CLOSED]

I'm not sure Playback deserves a nomination for best set design of 2008, seeing as its pretty much a bench on green baseplates with the whole-piece trees in the background. The large scale figures were very cool, but there where so many other films to choose, I'd personally swap playback for Train to Catch.

Playback was still awesome, though.

Re: The 2008 Bricks In Motion Awards Nominations [CLOSED]

Yeah, when i thin about it I concur with Riley.

Nah, I'm very much in favor of Playback getting a nomination; and yes, it's because of the two figures.

Once agian,I don't see why horse is JUST THE BEST THING EVAR in some of your eyes.It is a good film, good animation voices, everything. But it's not amazing. It didn't blow me away.Other films did.

I think a lot of brickfilmers mistake scope and ambition for quality.

Thanks for this NXT.  I regret not trying to make a good film in 2008.  Maybe next year mini/tongue
