Haha that was awesome. I'm going to be filming a short scene in a supermarket for my next film - kinda worried they'll just kick us out straight away. Seemed like you got away with it!
We went in, shot what we needed, and got out. For the Checkout line scene, we did ask the register person if she minded. She told us to ask the manager, and the manager said to ask if the register person minded. 
Still probably a good idea to ask the Manager on duty first though if it's cool or not. Or you could go in "under cover" and cut a hole in a backpack/cloth shopping bag and put the camera in there. Just a thought. 
Haha, yeah that could work. I won't be needing any staff in the scenes so hopefully it should be okay. I think my plan now is to go to one supermarket and ask and if they say no, just rush into the other down the road...!
