Topic: In the market for a brand spanking new camera

Howdy.

It's been a while since I've been on here, being busy with my Diploma of multimedia course and all (which I graduate next week! Woot!).

Once I've finished said course I want to get myself back into animating. And I want to do it as a higher quality than my 9k can provide.

So I'd like to ask, if it isn't to much trouble, for some advice on what camera(s) I should look at. My want list is as follows...

- compatible with stop motion pro
- widescreen
- manual controls (obviously)
- low lense, to allow more creative shots
- a VERY good resolution. I'm going to want to be able to broadcast this on TV if the opportunity arrives.
- a lot of optical zoom

I'm prepared to pay quite a lot, as long as I get what I'm paying for. I hate cutting corners if I can help it.

Thanks in advance,
Sean

You're aware that the 9k can film at 1600 x 1200, right?

Even so, the quality it provides at that size can't be matched by a proper camcorder... Unless there's something I'm missing.

A possible option?

Which version of SMP are you using? As my version (education) only lets me shoot at 640x480 or less with my Quickcam pro 9000, and to upgrade to a version which allows me to film at an unlimited resolution, which also happens to be compatible with the QC's HD ability, is a substantial investment ($790).

So if I were you, I would uprgrade SMP before considering a new camera

Re: In the market for a brand spanking new camera

I currently have the education version of SMP. I should also add to my list, optical zoom.

I'm very happy with what I've been getting out of it, here's a raw image taken with my 9k using HeliumFrog.

Re: In the market for a brand spanking new camera

I'm totally saying a powershot A85. it's great. I have a similar model, and it can go up to 2024x1784 or something, widescreen, still high resolution widescreen, great focus, and all manual controls. it would be your best bet.

The canon HV30 looks very nice... Although I think firstly I'll take CheesyBricks' advice and upgrade my version of SMP first.

Thanks for your help guys.
