Topic: Possibly creating new stop-mo software, your input requested :)

Hi,

Quite a while ago my friend made a post here about creating some stop-mo software.  He's the brickfilming person and I'm the programmer.  I don't know if this is actually going to happen, but I think its a good idea and there doesn't seem to be much competition in the market.  Not sure if it's going to be free or not, that will come down to some legal issues, if we do charge, it will be inexpensive.

Regardless, I am trying to decide what language to write it in (programming language, not written language), and that will depend on the operating systems of our target audience (you).

Some possibilities are Java (good for cross-compatibility), Adobe AIR (the same), and good old C (good for speed).

So, if you wouldn't mind, post your operating system(s) and camera(s) you use to do your work here.

Thanks!

I don't know much about programing languages but if C is fast go with that

I wrote / am writing Helium Frog in Visual Basic 6, its plenty fast enough when compiled for most computers. A lot of the fast routines for graphics are optimized code anyway (directX) and are common if you are using any modern microsoft language.

I would however avoid Java, it is cross platform, but sooner or later you will come to a brick wall and find there are things you cannot do easily. It is basically a knocked down version of C, so you might as well write it in C.

Limitation is also true of Visual Basic, particularly for controlling directX core functions, but development is so much faster and more enjoyable in Visual Basic than C which is why I chose it. I also have a panic attack when I see more than a few brackets on one line!

My choice if I were to start again would be C++. If a computer is able to do something, you will be guaranteed to be able to do it in C++. There are also numerous examples on the net for frame capture and almost all programming examples are supplied in C. C is also cross platform if you are careful how you write your code. Microsoft are leaning toward cross platform C++ anyhow.

From what I can see from the youtube videos, I would forget Adobe Air. You will be able to produce a fantastic front end that will knock the socks of any other software, but you will still need to write the core routines. Get that done first and worry about the fancy graphics later.
