i downloaded blender after hearing anout it but what does it actually do
how do i use it with my brick films?
What purpose does it serve
Blender is primarily a CGI program, but it has a few other features. Be warned, I hear it's very hard to learn.
Leo used it in Plant.

'Computer Generated Imagery'
Blender is a very large (but lightweight) program designed around a 3d application. It also includes a nodes compositor, video editor, and image editor as well.
I used it in Plant t create computer generated backgrounds for many of the shots.
