Topic: How to make a StopMotion script?

Hello peoples! I am new here and not new to animating i have been doing it for a year now and i never did any real brickfilms just lil test and that sort. So my question is for you guys how would you write a StopMotion script? I know its a stupid question but when you plan something out it turns out better and i never get any good ideas but would like to organize that into a script if i ever got a good idea. Would you make a storyboard or sketches, or write a prose telling the story and adding dialog or just simply writing how you will animate the story and the characters. I am asking what you do when you make a script, and just basic tips in general.~Shdw:)

Well, if you need an example, here is a link to the script for my movie Girlfriend Trouble.

I use Celtx. It has everything you need: script writing, character development, scene information, etc.

It's cross platform (Win, OSX, Linux)...and it's free!

Re: How to make a StopMotion script?

For me, I don't see many differences between a stop-motion script and a live-action script. None to be exact.
I write my scripts in MS Word. If you are looking for a good lay-out, this site should help you.

Re: How to make a StopMotion script?

My writing process:

  • Come up with a good idea. This is usually the hardest and most time-consuming part.

  • Write a 1-2 sentence summary of the film, like the blurbs that appear in the TV guide. This should decide two things: the main character, and GENERALLY what happens. Nothing specific, just enough to describe what the main action of the film will fall under. For example: "A man must dodge a maze of obstacles familiar and strange on a harrowing journey to the mailbox (James Maduzia's The Letter)." Or "James Bond investigates the actions of a private banker suspected of not only financing terrorist acts across the globe but organizing some of his own (Casino Royale)."

  • Write a one-page double-spaced summary of the story. Be sure to decide two things here: what happens at the beginning and what happens at the end. Writing some ideas for the middle is also good, but you can change them later without too much difficulty. But if you change where the story starts or finishes, you're likely to get lost and end up with a wavering, nonsensical script in a hurry.

  • Finally, write the script. I use Celtx, which 262 linked to above.

Re: How to make a StopMotion script?

i would think it would be best to use both. script for the diologe and part of movment, movment in storyboard but dont have speech in storyboard. at least that is how i would do it, personaly ive never used a script

Re: How to make a StopMotion script?

I've been through advanced script writing at the collegiate level, (just this last semester mini/tongue). The current standard for script writing follows the BBC screenplay format found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/script … mats.shtml in a PDF. I HIGHLY recommend the program Celtx like 262(check his post for link) because it can be used for both screenplay and 2-column A/V shot shooting scripts.

for a fantastic guide as to how a script looks check out this script of Doctor Who (and a good episode too mini/wink ) : http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/insigh … 3_ep_1.pdf

hope that helps!

cwr89!  Good to see you over here!  It's always fun to see some older brickfilmers have continued with film/video.

Formatting a script in Celtx is definitely a good idea, I can't say proper formatting is something I have adhered to in working on my own films so far, I'm sure as I progress it's a skill I'll need to acquire however.

Script writing on the brick film scale does not have to be in the screen play format because this is something that (for most) only the writer will see. Now, I recommend learning it because if you ever need some help from others or possibly professionals, they need to be able to understand what you have written and how things are going to progress and develop in your story.

Smeagol, I've been away from brick films so long that when people were talking about bricks in motion I thought they were talking about the yahoo group from back in about 2002. hehe. I still love making brick films and its one of my biggest influences in going into telecommunications. its great to come back and still see names that I recognize!

further more this topic prompted me to write an even larger topic over at brickfilms. http://brickfilms.com/community/viewtop … mp;t=25788

Re: How to make a StopMotion script?

Yeah I saw that, nice collection of resources.  Bricksinmotion doesn't have a resources section yet, but we're trying to collect tutorials and links for it right now.  BF was bought by a company, who has through a lot of very unprofessional conduct managed to drive away almost all of the community, as well as most of the volunteer staff, so we started over with a new site.  Here's one retelling: http://www.loneverse.com/index.php?titl … _Chronicle
