what would be a decent cheap camera i could put onto a tripod?
I assume you already know about the Logitech C920...

This is the 's' version, it is the same just optimized for newer operating systems, and with a privacy thing.
Most affordable webcams would do the trick for stopmotion, but when you start getting into cameras with tripod mounts the prices tend to go up. The camera 2X4 provided is probably the most common stopmotion webcam, and takes excellent pictures. There are also some cheap mobile phone clips that attach to tripods that could possible fit some webcam models.
