Topic: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

I think by now most of us are aware of what's going on with the recent changes Youtube is making, particularly the "made for kids" restrictions that are already flagging brickfilmers. (1) (2)

However, this isn't a complaint thread. This is a solution thread.
I know some are just rolling with the punches, and others hoping they can slip by, but I've also read form others that are considering leaving the platform. Personally, the more I hear about this, the more I'm leaning towards the latter.

If you were to switch to a different host for your videos, where would you go, and why?
Bitchute? Newgrounds? Vimeo? Your own personal website?

I've heard several names thrown out, but little about why.

What are your opinions?

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

Newgrounds. I've had some promising results on Newgrounds and I think that's our best option. Whether YouTube gets its act together or not, I think it's the best platform for our community.

Plus, there's strength in numbers.

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

It's not really a case of YT "getting it's act together", but more a case of Google having a look at this massive white elephant and trying to figure out how to make it profitable. Chad, Steve and Jawed jumped at the right time in 2005 when they sold to Google, YT is a massive resource hog which voraciously eats up hard drives and servers. Just think of the hardware requirements for people to be uploading 300 hours of HD video every minute! (Accurate as of September 2019)

Having users that upload 14 hour videos of the same 5-second clip on a loop isn't really good for anybody, and although they make a fair bit of money from the advertising (which probably aren't paying the bills considering how they are getting more and more intrusive), when you consider the staff requirements, servers, renting space to store servers, constantly buying more hardware to house new content, constantly replacing old hardware that fails - it's all going to add up.

Imagine the electricity bill! Not just to run all the electronics, but the cooling as well...

Smile and say hello to people. It costs you nothing and can brighten their day.

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

There is also PeerTube, an open source project still in its early phase of development. PeerTube is a decentralized video hosting platform, which means that anyone can install an instance of PeerTube and run it on its own server. The instances then can federate, so that videos from one instance can be viewed on another one. That way, there is no central power that can decide videos for children can't have comments anymore. Each instances have their own set of rules, and some are dedicated to one kind of videos (vlogs, music videos, gaming...).

They probably don't have numbers as good as Newground, and their UI can certainly be improved, but it's being actively worked on, and I think it's worth mentioning.

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

I, myself, haven't had that good of an experience with Newgrounds. Besides, isn't that website the internet equivalent of hosting a boxing match at the ancient Roman Colosseum? mini/tongue

And Vimeo only allows so many gigs of upload space with a free account (and a 10/15 minute upload limit on free accounts too, if I'm not mistaken)

Twitter supports video and Bitchute isn't a half-bad idea.

I know it would be very memory-heavy and expensive, but what about going old school and having Bricks in Motion host the videos directly? (a la pre-Youtube Brickfilms.com) Or what about a Brickshelf, but for video; made just for Lego content?

Just throwing ideas out there.

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

Chris has already mentioned NewGrounds, but honestly I really think it’s the best alternate option for us right now. It’s a platform specifically for animation, and you’re basically guaranteed 100 views or more in the first day, which is a big help for smaller channels.
Here we’ve got a thread in the NewGrounds forums with lots of different animators introducing themselves.

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

I'm not moving from youtube. It's the best hosting site. Even if I lose comments, people can still comment on BiM, Twitter, or wherever I post. I may even start posting to Facebook again, but I dont know if I'm that desperate for the comments. My audience is on YouTube.

My take is that while it may be better for creators to host elsewhere where comments are allowed, it's not better for consumers. I'm not gonna go to far lengths to hunt down brickfilms personally. So if you're putting them on Newgrounds exclusively and not crossposting to youtube too, I prolly won't see the video. And that comes from me, a brickfilmer. Your audience is suddenly reduced to like, four people and a handful of strangers on a site that isn't youtube.

For a lot of us with smaller channels, we get more views on NG than the same videos did on YT, and a lot of us have already moved there, so at least other brickfilmers will still be watching our content. I do think that crossposting is a good idea, at least for the time being.
I do understand where you’re coming from, especially as you have more of an established audience than a lot of us.

But isn't that the most indie !@#$ ever; posting films on a website where almost no one's gonna go out of their way to see them? mini/tongue

That's not the point. William Osborne's Dancing in the Street recreation got over twice the amount of views on Vimeo as it did YouTube. But the Vimeo upload only has 4 comments while the YouTube upload got 28. (plus the 5 on BiM and the twitter responses...)

Views do not directly correlate to audience & engagement beyond the initial single click. And even then, a look into the YouTube Analytics page generally shows that audience retention, even for short videos, is rather short. (e.g. clicking on and clicking right back off)

Especially when it comes to content like brickfilms, audience convenience should be a priority.

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

Sweet!
Thanks for all the detailed replies. I hope this will continue to grow into an even more helpful resource for all.
And yep, I did it. I signed up on Newgrounds.

Rio, you've got a good point. Unless Youtube descends to more levels of lunacy, I probably won't completely abandon the platform either. (Though the idea crossed my mind.) I'll wait to see just how well NewGrounds does and see how the dust settles on all these changes on YT. Also, thanks for presenting a different point of view. It's good to hear from those on all sides of this.

Dyland, great point about the difference between views, and actual engagement. Problem is, those higher comment counts on Youtube are about to become a moot point. That's the very reason many are considering switching.

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

What happens if we don't do anything to our youtube channels? Will our videos be removed or blocked? Will adults still be able to view them freely?

If you don't do anything, the default setting is "I want to review this setting for every video.". And if you don't set it for a video, YouTube chooses by themselves which setting is appropriate. Which is what happened to all your previously uploaded videos if you didn't do anything.

But you won't be blocked. Anyone can watch the videos. The comments might go away if youtube marks your video as "for kids" and people can't add them to playlists. That's about it.

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

This is huge. Watched JANGBRICKS video on it and finally made the decision that it just isn't worth the risk. Thinsg will change dramatically on the platform for sure.

I don't know what the current financial state of BricksInMotion is, but I don't think the pockets are deep enough for that kind of hosting. Server space isn't actually that expensive, it's the bandwidth. A site can potentially host thousands of videos, so long as each one is only getting a few views a month it isn't an issue. But if one 25Mb video gets mega popular (maybe some famous person links to it) it can suck up the month's bandwidth allowance in a day (or a few hours). If we're lucky, the hosting company simply shuts the site down. If the hosting company is "user friendly" they might keep providing a service (good for the viewer, good for the brand) but hand over a bill for thousands of dollars at the end of the month (very bad for the site owner / admins).

Using an existing site which has a large company behind it is a much better idea than BiM hosting.

Smile and say hello to people. It costs you nothing and can brighten their day.

Newgrounds is pretty decent with audience engagement though, with people commenting quite freely, comparable to youtube for a similar amount of views. I just don't see why we shouldn't just upload on both sites, I feel as though that is the best of both worlds, and provides a sort of 'safety net' when more changes are made to youtube that'll harm animators

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

I don't want to be a part of a website that hosts and actively supports pornographic content. And I won't go there to watch 'your' films - whomever that 'you' is. Newgrounds, IMHO, is not a place for brickfilms and brickfilmers - even those that wish to spread their videos out amongst multiple platforms.

IMO, there are better platforms.

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

It sounds like things are cooling over with YouTube's last update. They are giving us more of a choice than having them take over our videos. I guess time will tell.

I checked out LBRY and that didn't look great but DaikyMotion looked ok.

A platform with a large volume of Lego video creators other than YouTube would be nice so long as there is at least some kickbacks ie. Money.

As for the audience, if enough users speed the word, people will come.

Also what's stopping us from having our videos on more than one platform? Why not?

For now let's see what January 2020 will bring.

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

Do any of you guys know what that Brick-a-Brack website is? A lot of you use it, right? Is it a good YouTube alternative?

Re: Alternative Video Hosting Sites

Brick-a-Brack isn't a YouTube alternative. You can't upload there. It's a French website that operates in a similar manner as Bricks in Motion in that you post your video there and people can comment.
