Is Helium Frog Dead?
So reading down the forums for capture software, I found that most of you would recommend Helium Frog. I had tried it once before and was annoyed/confused at the "ancientness" of it, but I decided to try again. I had already uninstalled it so i went to the helium frog website:
http://www.heliumfrog.com/heliumfrogindex.html

So I downloaded the version 2.06. It didn't work. The main page had a link to help get it to work on windows 10 here:
http://blog.boatsarerockable.com/2014/0 … rk-on.html

So I started following the instructions listed there and the first was to go to this site here:
http://heliumfrog.codeplex.com/releases/view/45028

Which meant Google popped up a nice little warning about dangerous malware and viruses that would instantly destroy my PC if I dared click on that unsafe link which pretty much stopped my hunt for the floating frog fixes.

Is there better software other than Dragonframe? Is there some other way to fix it?  or is Helium Frog dead?

Re: Is Helium Frog Dead?

I don't know anything about Helium Frog, so I can't help you there. There are a few good substitutions however. If you're looking for a free alternative, consider checking out Heron Animation. Keep in mind, the software is still under development and has a few bugs. There's also Monkey Jam which is one of the more well known software.

Re: Is Helium Frog Dead?

In short, kinda. Well, more like mostly dead.
And fixing it would probably be even more effort than simply writing something new or upgrading Heron.

I used HeliumFrog for ages before recently jumping over to Heron. There's a reason it's so highly recommended.
There's also a reason it's falling out of favor.

It hasn't been updated in years, and while the author claimed back in 2012, then again in 2015, to be working on a new version, neither has yet to see the light of day. It started out great, but mildly buggy. Being free, but with all the great features animators have been looking for made it a popular choice. But as time and computers have progressed, it had steadily become more and more unusable. At least for me.

Simply put, HeliumFrog is really old and really buggy. When it works, it's my favorite animation software.
When it doesn't, well...yeah. Especially since Windows 10 came out, I've had so many issues with it that it become unusable, but I'd still suggest you try it.

If you want, I can hunt around and email you the HeliumFrog files you'll need for Windows 10 if you don't trust that site. Honestly, it's been so long since I've downloaded them that I can't remember if the site threw those warnings for me or not. (I'm thinking not)

HeliumFrog has onion-skinning, easy playback, several export options, and (the biggest advantage over Heron) 1080p recording. However, even when working "right" the settings menu tends to get stuck, forcing you to close the program to exit that, and utilities does the same.

At this point, I'd suggest Heron. It's new, clean, slick, and actively being supported and developed. I love the look, and that's it's made by a member of BiM. If you need 1080p, MonkeyJam is a good option.

However, the latter isn't as clean, the preview window is the same size as the final frame, making it really big and hard to see, and it simply seems clunkier. Plus, I've had some issues with crippling bugs since upgrading to Windows 10. However, it's a functional and solid piece of software. It's free, so it'll be easy to give it a try.

Re: Is Helium Frog Dead?

I'm the author of that blog post you mentioned. mini/smile Despite that warning, the CodePlex website is safe, it's just that Microsoft are shutting it down and seemingly haven't bothered to renew their security certificate for it as a result, hence causing the error.

Regardless, the download that seemed to solve the problem is no longer available on CodePlex, even if you do click through the error message. I emailed the Helium Frog developer Martin Price the other day but am yet to receive a response.

On a side note, I was working on my own capture program Boats Animator but unfortunate haven't had time to work on it recently. I even managed to implement 1080p capture but due to a couple of bugs I never released it. Maybe I'll get some time this summer to work on it. The code is all open-sourced but I've never found many people with the time or skills to contribute.

Even with Heron, there is still not an ideal free capture program out there at the moment. Software development takes time, especially when it's been made by hobbyists. But there is definitely a gap in the market that needs filling!  Hopefully myself, Aiwha or someone else will one day be able to get round to this.

Edit: I made this spreadsheet a while back if you want to compare all of the free capture programs out there: mini/smile

Re: Is Helium Frog Dead?

Thanks for all the responses!
Okay so helium frog is mostly dead but it's probably still safe to fix it if you can figure out how.
So I'm down to Heron vs Monkey jam or cough up some coinage.
Can you buy dragon frame without the keypad? the website was inconclusive.

Going off topic but... Have y'all seen the Lego movie 2 trailer? https://youtu.be/GZOtIvpR5Lw

Re: Is Helium Frog Dead?

A separate topic has been made for discussing that trailer, post your thoughts there mini/smile
