Topic: How do you do rig-removal in Adobe After Effects?

For the past year or so, I've been using GIMP to do masking (rig removal) and making my Legos fly. And nowadays, it's a mix between Photoshop AND GIMP (I use each one at certain times and needs mini/sunnies). Although these programs are great in all, they're EXTREMELY time consuming (as most of you guys know). So that's why I would like to switch over to After Effects, since the time is very minimalistic mini/wink. I will say I know minimal knowledge of After Effects (how to add VFX like Action Essentials 2 and move it accordingly with keyframings and other), but I was wondering if you guys know and how to do rig-removal (masking to say) in After Effects? I've seen a few videos on how, but for what ever reason they aren't helping me in any way mini/sad. Any help possible would be really nice

Anyway, if you guys need any more information, don't hesitate to ask mini/wink.

I've seen this tutorial. Hmm, maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I didn't quite achieve this sadly mini/sad. It had something to do with the mask. After I did the pen tool, it wasn't' really "masking" the way I thought it would.

If needed, I can show (via screenshot from my computer) where I was stuck.

Yeah, let's see your screenshots as the video itself skips some crucial steps.  Or find another AE masking tutorial.

Make sure the footage is the top and the clean frame the bottom layer. When masking you need to select your footage that the mask is on the right layer. I'm not familiar with AE but maybe you need to select subtract from the mask option. Maybe you can send a screenshot

Ok, here's a screenshot on what's going on

Let me know if you need anything else mini/wink

Re: How do you do rig-removal in Adobe After Effects?

Hm... Maybe you need to make your "tiff layer" visible (the eye symbol on the left).Other than that I don't know what to do. As mentioned I'm not using AE so maybe someone else knows more.

Re: How do you do rig-removal in Adobe After Effects?

Why did you set the first mask to none?

I just tried that. Sadly, no luck mini/sad. Well, thanks for your help otherwise

I'm not sure. I just set that one to "subtract", but there was still no change. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong, or IF I'm doing something wrong that is. Hmm.

Re: How do you do rig-removal in Adobe After Effects?

Get rid of Mask 1 since it looks like it's just a mask around the frame.

Also, you're working on the tiff file, not the mp4 file.  Whatever you're doing in the tiff you can't see because the mp4 layer is on top of it.

Is the mp4 the original footage with rigs and everything in the shot and the tiff the blank plate?  If so, then you should move the tiff to the top.

Re: How do you do rig-removal in Adobe After Effects?

Aha! It worked! mini/smile So, here the final result:

So, "subtract" was not the right one. It was "add". And moving the tiff image to the top worked.

Thanks for your help mini/wink
