Topic: Name that Monster (Game Design)

Hey guys.  I'm looking for some monster name suggestions for a card game I'm designing.  The game is essentially a teaching tool about Logic Gates/Boolean operators in which players battle silly monsters with Logic Blasters using binary crystal ammos.

Here's the Google Doc link.  Just comment your suggestions.  Thank you in advance and have fun with it.

You can also vote on your favorite by adding an * to the name you see.

Re: Name that Monster (Game Design)

I have a really good name, but I can't tell you because I'm saving it for my own monster card game.

Re: Name that Monster (Game Design)

hey!  I just looked at this on the Tor browser (Google is blocked on my regular browser).  These look pretty cool.  I noticed some have more than one name.  Is that because there will be more than one version of many creatures that look idential (except maybe for color), some that are stronger than others?  Or are these possible names to choose from?

Eddie but no Vic? Boobat reminds me of a JellyBean.
Some cool designs and an interesting concept, I'm curious to see how the game works eventually.

The names you see are name suggestions from other people.  I'll eventually take the name suggestion and pick the best ones or just combine the best parts.

Okay.  If I come up with anything, I'll submit another way.  I don't share my ID on Google anything.

I try to do that as much as possible, unfortunately freelance work often requires working with people who are so ingrained into the google thing, that they simply won't budge. But they have the money, so I have a burner account, though I hate supporting tyrannical monopolies. I'm guessing you have a pro vimeo account?

Well, it's set up so that anyone can make a edit suggestion anonymously, so you could go on a browser you don't normally *cough*Edge*cough* where you're not logged in.

But in any case, I'll be closing it up this evening so do it fast if you have anymore name suggestions.

Yes!  If you'd like to watch my series, it's at http://vimeo.com/channels/holdingourown

Also, I like the look of the monsters.  They resemble 8-bit characters without the pixelization.  But they also have a look that's very trendy in Scandinavia.  I love that look.

I'm also really into retro-future, and have a tumble page called Blippicrunk at http://blippicrunk.tumblr.com  ...but now I'm getting off-topic.

Yes, curse those evil corporations for actually being good at their jobs of providing internet services and making  money so their employees can continue to make a living!

Alright folks, how about we try to let Lechnology have his monster naming thread instead of arguing about what doc hosting service he's using? Any further discussion on that topic will be deleted.

Re: Name that Monster (Game Design)

By the way, this is a card game, yes?  Are you going to let people playtest the game?  And I'm sure it's gotta be more innovative than Robot Turtles.

Re: Name that Monster (Game Design)

I've playtested a crude printed-on-cardstock version with a different set of monsters with some 5th graders and let them come up with a gameplay based on the premise that each monster has a weakness to a certain Logic Gate and you have to have the right combination of binary gems and Logic Gate to defeat it.

Basically you have Logic Gate cards, Dark Magic and Light Magic cards, and monster cards mixed into a deck.  Each player take turns drawing a card.  If they draw a Logic Gate or magic card, they hold onto it.  If they draw a monster card, it is placed face up and all players collaboratively combine the right Logic Gate and magic card they have to defeat the monster.  This is the simple version.

A more elaborate game would be along the line of monster battles where if a monster drawn becomes the player's monster and other players attempt to defeat it by arming their monster with logic blasters.

Another possibility is furthering the Logic Gate/Boolean operator lesson by combining Logic Blasters, but a point system would need to be developed to encourage combo attacks.

I've designed it so that there are multiple variants to the game, from collaborative to competitive

So it really does teach programming skills.  Cool.  All mine does is teach you to fight monsters for treasure in a dungeon.

Re: Name that Monster (Game Design)

Well, partially.  It'll only focus on the Boolean operator aspect of computer science.  Although, if there is interest, I can design game expansions that cover other aspects of Computer science.  Sites like Ozoblockly and Scratch use block coding so that can be translated to playing cards for something like a Poker game where players build hands that act as functions...

Well crap, I need to redesign my game.

I think I should change this topic into a Computer science card game brainstorm thread.

Re: Name that Monster (Game Design)

You can begin with boolean functions, and create expansions to make the game more complex and dynamic... rather than redesigining.
