Topic: Has BricksinMotion Awards Been Canceled?

Last year the announcement for the 2015 BricksinMotion awards came out in late February 2016. Now it's late April and there's still nothing on the 2016 BricksinMotion Awards. Has it been canceled or delayed this year for some reason?

Re: Has BricksinMotion Awards Been Canceled?

I've never been a part of the BricksinMotion awards, (or any of the previous incarnations in years past on brickfilms.com) however, I do know that it has been in flux ever since its inception. I was hoping that it would be back full time under Nathan Wells, however, it may not happen this year...

Hopefully one day a brickfilm awards ceremony will stand the test of time... I've even thought about starting my own, but, unless there are a lot of willing judges (who'd accept excluding their own work from being on the list) I don't see that happening anytime soon.

If someone from the previous BricksinMotion awards team wants to make a more-so "official" statement, that would remove all doubt.

Re: Has BricksinMotion Awards Been Canceled?

I'm not part of the team (wasn't last year either) but I believe it is not happening this year. Looks like they ran into the same problem I had back when I started it which was the difficulty of getting people to stick with figuring out nominees for it and then watch this huge list of films in order to vote.

Maybe something more crowdsourced would be more sustainable, but then that doesn't seem as appealing either.

Re: Has BricksinMotion Awards Been Canceled?

Short answer: In their current form, the Bricks in Motion Awards are cancelled.

Long Answer:

Zach and I really want to continue the Bricks in Motion Awards, we really do. But it takes a great amount of effort to put together and organize,. We have to keep track of notable brickfilms throughout the year, categorize them, gather a panel of judges to watch all of these film, narrow down our choices to about five films across nearly a dozen categories, and THEN we need to debate among ourselves to determine a winner in every category.

Frankly, when all was said and done, we were pretty let down by the relatively quiet response we got from the community.

I know there are value to the awards, and I know people do get pleasure out of seeing them. But I think the overly convoluted process of organizing them has got to go. Zach is simply too busy with work right now to take part, and I'm similarly busy. However, I do want to work with Sean (Penta) to get some sort of awards out for 2016. They won't involve panels of judges. I've found BiM members don't really seem to care about a rigorous judging process. You guys generally just trust us organizers to do right by you all, which is great!

So the 2016 BiM Awards will probably be a lot simpler. It might even just be "Sean and Nate's Top Brickfilms of 2016. It'll be something. But it won't involve months of internal debate among half a dozen judges that you guys don't even see.

In summary: Getting judges is hard; the Bricks in Motion Awards will continue in a slimmed-down form somehow.

Well I guess something is better than nothing.

Re: Has BricksinMotion Awards Been Canceled?

Could we at least do the community's choice side of things? That wouldn't need too much planning, and I feel like it's better to do something like that than nothing at all!

Re: Has BricksinMotion Awards Been Canceled?

I had thought of at some point in the (probably not near) future of doing an awards type thing, however, I didn't know that there was such a thing as a BiM award! I think it would be cool to have some type of award though mini/smile

Even if it takes the form of a bit of a BiM Awards Lite, the longlist we compiled won't go to waste.

From the social media department's point of view, whatever is noted and selected would get its 150 characters or less spotlight.
