Topic: Blipspace

Hey guys. For the first time in a while I'm making plans to work on some animation for my own amusement so I thought I'd give one of these production threads a go. I'll try to keep it updated as I go along so you can watch all the enthusiasm steadily drain away.

So the deal is, I'm working with Peter "Exo Suit" Reid on a series of CG films starring one of his other iconic creations - the humble blip.

I can't remember exactly when Pete invented the blip but they've been around for a good long while. They're kind of like the minions of his space universe - a cheap, expendable workforce used by the classic space guys for maintenance, mining, salvage - pretty much any grunt work that the space guys themselves can't be bothered doing.

Pete's been building a lot of blip-based stuff lately and we got to talking about how best to showcase it. He didn't want the hassle of doing another book like his Lego Space one so we decided that I'd go through the hassle of making films about them instead.

Right now we have three stories worked out, each visiting a different deep space outpost where blips have a presence. Production begins on the first one this weekend. It's a Christmas story so there's a built-in deadline of December 24th. That gives me four months, which is cutting it kind of fine for a CG production. Pete and another AFOL friend, Jeremy Williams, will be building models and I'll be writing and animating.

Fun challenges along the way will include dealing with the fact that blips don't talk and have no faces.

So to cut a long story short...

Looks great can't wait to see more

Re: Blipspace

This sounds like a great project, and I can't wait to see how it develops.

Re: Blipspace

It's very nice to hear that you're making another personal project. Looking forward to how it turns out, and to future updates.

Re: Blipspace

One thing that may not be commonly known is that real world blips are not static models - they move. This is some live action footage of them playing blipball with half a tomato.

Blips in motion

We're aiming to reproduce this jerky, juddery movement in the CG animation. Because just regular smooth movement would be way too easy.

Re: Blipspace

That's just not fair. Please, would LOVE a behind the scenes on that!

Re: Blipspace

Is it magnetized? Also, why is the video unlisted?

Re: Blipspace

It's unlisted because it's just a WIP motion demo rather than a film that I want people to see on my channel. And yes, it's magnets. How do they work? There's a tiny one from a Lego fridge magnet under the blip's dish and a larger M:Tron magnet under the table. It works surprisingly well. We also played table soccer with blips and a pea but no one filmed it.

Re: Blipspace

Hah! Amazingly effective. I had honestly thought you'd evolved to your divine form and that was a mashup of stop motion and live action. Awesome way to get reference for the jerkiness.

Re: Blipspace

It most certainly does.

My profile picture is deep fried lol

Re: Blipspace

In case anyone was wondering, work is quietly progressing on this. I've booked a pro actor to narrate the story and Pete and Jeremy have been building away like crazy. I've been doing some lighting tests and trying to learn how to use Blender properly. I still have a little way to go on that score.

The basic CG blip looks like this at the moment. I'm planning to scuff them up a little and make them look more lifelike.

(Shout out to rioforce for his super useful Blender materials tutorial, which I've been referring to a lot just lately.)

I'd also like to get it so the head domes light up when they talk but I don't know if that's going to happen. Lights and transparency don't mix in Blender world. It takes around an hour to get a clean render of this shot if I add a light to the lead blip.

So anyway, long story short, there's a ton of work to do before I get to start animating.

Re: Blipspace

Guys, remember that it's important to always back up your files and also not delete them by mistake.

Meanwhile, here's the two main characters who aren't blips and Mr Teddington, who has a non-speaking role.

(I hope this works. I've left the picture private on flickr. Let me know if it's not showing up.)

Re: Blipspace

They look great. The modeling looks really good, and I like the pajamas. And yes, it works, you can leave photos on private on flickr and link them (most of mine are).

Re: Blipspace

Progress is not going as quickly as I would like. I'm starting to pull the environments and lighting together though.

It might be nearly time for a computer upgrade. This shot took 50 minutes to render and I haven't even made a start on bevelling the bricks yet.

Re: Blipspace

That is beautiful.

Re: Blipspace

Looks like some really neat lighting, and texture via the set design! Looking forward to more.
