Topic: iMovie Compression(for mac users only)

Alrighty, I really don't want to start a huge fiasco about this, but I'm just a bit curious as to see who has had problems with this, and maybe see if there's any possible solution.

So, I'd been using iMovie '11 as my primary video editor, up till about mid-last year, and for the most part, it was a great beginner and intermediate video editor. You've got multiple sound tracks for exquisite sound editing, a pretty sleek, and for the most part intuitive interface, and even the ability to do some decent visual effects.(gun flares, other random stuff, etc.) But as I've grown as a filmmaker, my standard for quality material has gone up, and thusly, I have pretty much stopped using iMovie for one reason.

The mother friggin video compression from the depths of hell.

Yes, that very reason. It didn't bug me in my earlier filmmaking years, but that's obviously not the case where I'm at now. I love iMovie and all it does except for this reason, and here is an example of what I am referring to.

This image is the raw, and it has pretty decent quality to it.

Here's the same image, but processed into iMovie. Hopefully, you can tell the difference.

If you notice, there's some disgusting compression artifacts all over the top, and while a budding filmmaker who easily skims over things like these wouldn't give a crap, I DO, and I won't ever stand for quality such as this again.

Here's some more instances of people having this problem:

All that said, I'm not too worried, as I'm hoping to try out the new iMovie '10 pretty soon and see if that promises anything better.(anybody used that yet?) But I'm just curious to see who here has dealt with this issue in '11,(or cared for that matter) and has possibly come up with a solution for it.

Thanks.

Re: iMovie Compression(for mac users only)

I would look into finding another video editor. I have not experienced the issues you are having, but I'm using the latest version of iMovie. iMovie restricts me to only using the 16:9 aspect ratio for my films, and I see you are using a wider aspect ratio. For that reason and your compression issue you are having I suggest looking into a different editor. I myself am looking into a different editor, but then again I don't really need a different one because I have all I need in iMovie and GarageBand.

Re: iMovie Compression(for mac users only)

Why don't you just export it uncompressed and use Handbreak to compress it?

Re: iMovie Compression(for mac users only)

Sloth, I've tested out the new iMovie and it seems to work just fine for my needs, but I'll answer your question anyways. I'm not familiar with Handbreak, but I know that iMovie '11 compresses your footage on import, and gives you no control over that fact. After some research I've discovered this is due to some weird codec Apple implemented in order to make iMovie run smoother.

This topic is no longer needed, but I do appreciate the feedback anyways, so thanks.

Re: iMovie Compression(for mac users only)

iMovie has always and will always have this problem. That's why it's free with the computer. It's one of the reasons I hate where I am in terms of money.
