Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

I had the pleasure of hearing a live orchestra perform the soundtrack to Interstellar this week, alongside the film, and that's affirmed by belief that Hans Zimmer's score is one of the greatest ever. Deeply moving unexplainable ways. There was spontaneous applause after the docking scene.

Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

Hans Zimmer is my favorite. I once read from someone that they don't like Zimmer's music because they thought that he only makes loud drums. They said something along the lines of him not know how to make diverse music. What the person said gives me the impression that they only listened to the Inception, or Batman Trilogy soundtrack. Hans Zimmer has a fairly wide array of sounds.

I'll start with what most people think of when they think of Zimmer:

Time - Inception (The video contains spoilers of the movie)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxabLA7UQ9k

Why So Serious? - The Dark Knight
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6wrZ6P6-wU

Cornfield Chase - Interstellar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Vko01D77Fg

Now some others:

You're So Cool - True Romance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq5kbNW8VKU

Now We Are Free - Gladiator (Sorry Harborlight, this has words)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHAvjaHtlMA

My Mind Rebels At Stagnation - Sherlock Holmes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZL40zWEHOUE

Leave No Man Behind - Black Hawk Down
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-luZXfkZ9k

Hoist the Colours - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (This has words too)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugx48uvvURc

So while Zimmer may use drums a lot, he is capable of much more.

One of my other favorites is Thomas Newman:

Shawshank Prison - The Shawshank Redemption
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM9c_MleWYY

Nemo Egg (Main Title) - Finding Nemo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYuXG0C2tsk

The Letter That Never Came - Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (my personal favorite)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjF3VNvtW7Q

Valley of Shadow - Little Women

Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

I am personally not a fan of Hans Zimmer's Dark Knight music, it's not really my taste. Though I love most of the Pirates of the Caribbean score. The score he did for The Bible TV series is also pretty neat.

Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

Personal favourite single track, the Serenity theme by David Newman from... Uh, Serenity. I'm partially biased since I simply adore Firefly, but I also just think it's an incredible piece of music that fits the film so perfectly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeqRV9DCpS8

On a less biased level, everything Howard Shore wrote for the LOTR films. That score was just magical.

Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

I'm familiar with a whole lot of composers, but I really enjoy John Williams(the star wars soundtrack more specifically), Hans Zimmer, and other various composers. More recently I've been listening to the Minecraft soundtrack by C418 because it's just so chill and emotional.

Here's some tracks:

John Williams - Anakin's Betrayal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRt-dieB3rs

Hans Zimmer - Detach
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3fgY2o8_LA

Daft Punk - Recognizer

C418 - Subwoofer Lullaby

Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

I don't really have a vast array of music knowledge at my disposal, focusing instead on the visual facet of art, however I am familiar with a fair number of film composers and scores.

My favourite soundtrack, hands down, is the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy soundtrack by Howard Shore: Complete LOTR Soundtrack. I really don't have words for how some of the music makes me feel. Absolutely amazing in my book.

That said, I do enjoy a lot of others. Some of the ones that come to the top of my head immediately are (in no particular order):

Han's Zimmer:
Pirates of the Carribean Example: Main Theme
Sherlock Holmes Example: Catatonic
This entire soundtrack has such a different sound from typical movie scores. I really like a lot of the tracks.
Inception Example: Time

Joe Hisaishi:
Spirited Away Example: The Sixth Station
I really don't remember most of the music in Spirited Away all that much but I do really like some of it.
Castle in the Sky Example: The Girl Who Fell from the Sky
I really love the example song I listed here (sort of the main theme of the movie).

Yann Tiersen:
Amélie Example: La Noyée
Oddly enough, I haven't even seen the movie. I don't even remember how I found this soundtrack honestly... I just love it. Accordians ftw. mini/XD

Bruno Coulais:
Song of the Sea Example: Dance With The Fish
I just watched the movie, and let me say, I was blown away. Not only is it a great movie, some of the music is simply enchanting.

John Powell:
How To Train Your Dragon Example: Test Drive
The movie is good, the music is better. So many of the songs in HTTYD are amazing.

Vangelis:
Chariots Of Fire Example: Chariots Of Fire
The theme song is mostly the reason I like this score.

John Williams:
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark Example: Main Theme
Yep, John Williams had to be here someplace... mini/wink

Well, those are some of my personal favorites. I might add to this list as I remember more great soundtracks/scores that I love.

Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

The Journey OST by Austin Wintory.

Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

Pretty Much the first soundtrack I actually cared for as a whole:

The Rocketeer

Though, since then, I've found myself purchasing many soundtrack albums just for their beautiful scores. Case in point:

Atlantis the Lost Empire - Expedition Crew's Music, "Atlantan Civilization's" Music, and this little snippet.

I just love those old style, over the top and very whimsical scores like those seen in Star Wars and Indiana Jones. But, I'm also a sucker for those 1950's and earlier massively epic pieces that nearly out-shined anything that could be done on film at the time.

Here's a great example.

Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

Anything by Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone. Bernard Herrmann was another great composer.
And this is the first that comes to my mind when I think about great soundtracks.

Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

I'm a fan of Alexandre Desplat's work, my favourite's the score he did for The Grand Budapest Hotel, but he's done a whole range of stuff, from The King's Speech to Godzilla.

Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

Favourites would have to be the soundtracks from all the Star Wars films and the first Harry Potter film. John Williams is the king of musical scores.
I also love the soundtrack from the video game Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy by John Mancell. Easily the best music in any video game without a doubt.

Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

Yep, Zimmer, Williams, Elfman. They're all great. Anything with a harmonium or an organ from Interstellar, undoubtedly ties with any end-credits track from TDK or TDKR for the spot of being my personal favourite track from Hans.

But, once in awhile, a new musician will come in and make a soundtrack that really blows me away. A lot of Alexandre Desplat's work is really great, especially for Tree of Life, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The Imitation Game. They all have something new to offer, and his sound has inspired me the most. Tree of Life offers daunting piano music. Fantastic Mr. Fox includes honky-tonk, backwoods banjo riffs that are a lot of fun to listen to. And The Imitation Game abounds in complex and mesmerizing technical tunes that are simple, but beautiful.

Also, the TRON: Legacy soundtrack is, without a doubt, the only good thing to ever come out of Daft Punk. Not all the tracks are that great, but some are just thrilling to listen to. I've actually never seen either of the movies in that franchise, but after listening to some of the tracks, I might give the movies a chance in the near-future. Plus, going from Steve Aoki to "Derezzed" or "The Game Has Changed" during a techno/house jam session during Biology offers naught but progressive house pleasure.

Re: Instrumental Soundtracks

I do really like the works of many of the famous composers writing orchestral epics, but I tend to prefer music which is more tuneful and melodic, such as Michael Giacchino: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgWMkUaGjWs
