Topic: Cover That Song!

Some of you will remember this topic from Brickfilms.com.

The way it works is pretty straightforward: one person posts a song. For the next two weeks, anyone else can post a cover of that song. At the end of the two week period, the original poster will choose his or her favorite cover. The selected musician becomes judge for the next iteration, selecting a new song and repeating the process. There's no prize for winning, aside from getting to judge the next contest and having a cool song to show off. Don't feel like you have to make an exact recreation of any given recording of the song! If you can only record a small part of the song, that's better than nothing. Ultimately, I want this to be a fun thing where people can get creative and practice their musical skills. Collaboration is permitted (just make don't fight over who gets to choose the next song if you win mini/wink ).

With that out of the way, here are detailed rules:

1) Song choice: choose a song that's publicly available for listening (it doesn't necessarily have to be in the public domain, just don't choose something that people will struggle to find with a simple Google search). Note that choosing a song which isn't in the public domain could result in difficulty hosting the files- for example, SoundCloud technically doesn't allow covers without permission from the original artist. Songs without profanity are encouraged, so everyone can get in on the fun.

2) A judge will rank the top three songs from his or her entry period. If less than three songs are submitted, rank as many entries as you receive.

  • The entrant in first place becomes the judge for the next contest and gets to choose the next song.

  • If the first place winner does not post a new song within two days, second place has the right to choose a song.

  • If second place fails to post a song within two days, the right to choose goes to third place.

  • If third place fails to choose a song within two days, the first person to call dibs in this thread becomes the new judge.

3) Each entry period will start on the day the song choice is posted and end at midnight GMT, two weeks from that date. There will be no deadline extensions. If a period passes with no entries, the highest ranked entrant from the previous period who hasn't judged yet gets to choose the next song.

4) Songs with vocals and purely instrumental songs are both acceptable choices, but if a song with lyrics is chosen the judge will accept instrumental versions of that song. I know some people aren't big fans of singing, but I want it to be an option for anyone who is interested.

5) Entries will be posted in this thread, in a form which is publicly accessible. If you're not sure where to host your recording, SoundCloud is usually a good option.

Be creative and have fun!

Since I posted this at night, I'll give everyone one extra day in this iteration. The first contest period will end at 11:59 PM GMT on Friday, April 3rd.

To help motivate you, here are some entries from a past version of the contest in which the song was Carol of the Bells.

Re: Cover That Song!

So I just learned there's like five verses for Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star. I might do this... no, I will do this! If I don't post something within the next week, then... well, then I'm just not a very cool person or something.

Also, I challenge Smeagol to do this as well. Can we do challenges?

I LOVE this idea, but as such an enthusiast for 1980's music, would love the opportunity to choose a song from that decade!
The deadline is two weeks; can you give the specific date & time just so I don't miss it?

Re: Cover That Song!

You may have heard Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star before, but have you ever heard...

Spoiler (click to read)

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star sung badly and accompanied by banjo to the tune of "Train in Vain" by the Clash? Well, here's your chance!!

Re: Cover That Song!

I've got mine recorded, but I'm going to see about recording a second one. I'd just eaten some delicious treats before recording, so my throat was kinda phlegmy.

Re: Cover That Song!

Blue Ghost, that was really fantastic. I'm glad we were able to start out on such a strong entry.

I was inspired by BG's cover to record my own version, so listen to that if you fancy (I'm not going to include myself in the judging, of course). Let's keep the ball rolling, folks! I know you can come up with some great stuff.

Re: Cover That Song!

Still intend to enter, if I can squeeze the time in.  don't want to hear others until I make my own.

Re: Cover That Song!

Okay, since I probably won't get around to doing a second recording, here's mine:

Re: Cover That Song!

LB, I'm getting a 403 error when I try to access your song.

Re: Cover That Song!

Perhaps this one? If this one doesn't work, I'll upload it elsewhere.

Re: Cover That Song!

That one works LB. Thanks! Blue_Ghost just updated his link, so it should be working as well.

Re: Cover That Song!

I wanted to get this done, but I was so involved in my own brickfilm that I just let it slide until it was too late.

Re: Cover That Song!

Gosh who knew how many verses were in Twinkle?!
I couldn't leave BG and LB to be the only official entries so uhh here's my "cover":

Re: Cover That Song!

And that's a wrap!

The results for this round are:

3) Littlebrick. I enjoyed your singing. It would have been nice to see you go a little bit further toward making the song your own, but I understand it's hard to make something that isn't completely distinct from the original and make changes when you're doing it acapella. Also, don't be afraid to just put your stuff out there without the intro- we're all just amateurs trying to get better!
2) Cartoonkid98. The guitar backing on this one was interesting, and I think it worked well. One suggestion; it felt like you were unsure of where to go with the vocal melody, so if you tightened that up I think you could have something really unique.
1) Blue Ghost. The progression from Train in Vain was surprisingly fitting for this song, and your performance went a long way toward making it feel natural. A fun cover, and our first winning entry!

Thanks to everyone who entered! Blue Ghost, you have two days to choose the next song.

Re: Cover That Song!

Did you ever notice that Baa Baa Black Sheep, Twinkle Twinkle, & the Alphabet song all have the same melodies?  Whaaaat?
