Webcams are easy to use but not the best quality, I film with a digital camera as I get a clearer picture out of them but if you do film with a digital camera only film at 4 megapixels or less as your computer well play the film smoothly (unless you have a really powerful computer)
I have never used a camcorder for stop motion
And have you ever made any stop motion films before?
I've tried both and my personal favourite is the camcorder. The image quality is a lot higher and you can film straight to widescreen. The only benefit that the webcam has is that you can focus in a lot closer, but the fact that the 9000 only lets you shoot at 90 and 45 degree angles (unless you have an awesome cradle like VN) really put me off.
Webcams tend to be cheaper and are easier to use (I know from experience) and not all digital cameras will hook up to your computer with cables. I say that webcams are a good choice.
Hazzat- It takes me about a minute and a half for me to convert my video into widescreen and i use a webcam.

Do you mean side to side or up to down?
I find that a camera connected to the Computer is best, my Powershot G9 can take pictures in HD instantly!
I have a Canon Powershot A520 which connects to the computer via USB and a lovely little program called CSMC for direct capture.
me too.
But I think You don´t explain what you mean with "better"...???
So YOU have to explain WHAT is better in YOUR eyes.
Webcams are verry eay and simple to use.
Camcorders are easy to use too, and motsly the color-palette is a bit better than webcams
DigiCams mostly have the best picture/color-quality. but they are not so easy to use. You can´t zoom-in as you like wish, you have to re-work them mostly in your video-editing software.
